This kitchen in Minster, OH still had its original oak cabinets - full of character, just ready for an upgrade. Out went the old laminate countertop, in came a fresh slab (2 slabs actually 🤣) of Clarino quartz by Viatera. Same warm oak charm the homeowners loved, just a whole new kitchen to go with it.

📓 Is every "quartzite" countertop actually quartzite?

Nope. And it happens more than people realize.

Real quartzite is seriously tough — Mohs 7+, tougher than a steel knife blade. It barely scratches and handles heat way better than most materials out there.

The problem is some slabs labeled "quartzite" are actually marble or dolomite underneath. They can look almost identical, same soft veining and all, but they're much softer stones. They scratch easier, and they'll etch if something acidic touches them.

Here's a simple way to check. Put a drop of lemon juice on a hidden edge and wait about 5 minutes. If that spot dulls or etches, it's marble or dolomite, not quartzite. Nothing happens? You've got the real deal.

📓 Pop quiz, if "quartz" and "quartzite" are basically the same word, why are they such different materials?

The names aren't confusing you by accident. Both are, at their core, actually made of quartz.

👉 Quartzite starts as sandstone, buried deep underground for millions of years under intense heat and pressure until the quartz grains inside fuse together into solid rock. It's mined, cut, and polished — nothing added, nothing manufactured.

👉 Quartz countertops start with the same mineral. But instead of waiting millions of years underground, it's ground up and bound with resin in a factory, then pressed into slabs.

Same mineral. Two completely different journeys. That's the whole reason the names sound alike — and it's also why they behave so differently once they're in your kitchen.

🔥 Quartzite can take a hot pan straight off the stove without flinching. Quartz can't and direct heat above roughly 300°F can permanently damage the resin, leaving dark spots or cracks that can't be buffed out.
