A lot of people don't realize a solid wood desktop can be cared for the same way a hardwood floor can. Scratches sand out, dull spots take an oil finish, and a few minutes of maintenance once a year keeps the top looking close to new. A lot of desks are made by the thousand, running down a line in an overseas factory before they get boxed and shipped. We do the opposite. Each of our desks is built one at a time, by hand, here in Columbus, Ohio. It is slower and it costs more, and there is no version of this where we would trade that for a cheaper unit off a conveyor. Every Caretta desk comes in oak, cherry, or walnut, and you pick which one. These are the actual woods, so the desk you get is oak or cherry or walnut straight through the board. Walnut in particular has climbed in price lately and now sits near the top of what domestic hardwood runs, so a walnut desk carries that cost in the material itself. Nothing we sell is sitting in a warehouse in a flat box waiting for a label. We build your desk after you order it, which is the whole reason we can say yes to things a big brand cannot. Want a size that runs a little different, a wood we do not list by default, or a small change to fit your room? Ask. Pick up a mass-market desk and a lot of what you are holding is particle board or MDF, wrapped in a thin printed layer or a paper-thin veneer. Ours are not built that way. A Caretta desktop is solid hardwood cut from real boards, with no glued-up core hiding under a wood-look skin. That matters over the years, because a solid top can be sanded and refinished and holds its shape, while a veneered board that gets scratched or wet has nowhere to go but the landfill. The Athens lifts on a single column set in the center of the base. Most sit-stand desks hang a leg off each end. One high-capacity column keeps the underside open and leaves more room for your legs. The mechanism is Linak, which is why it runs smooth and quiet across its full range of 29 to 50 inches.
