You don’t need a spray booth or a shop full of expensive equipment to lay down a beautiful finish.

You need solid surface preparation, a few repeatable steps and the right products for the job.

I’ll show you what I use, why I use it and how I apply it—without shortcuts or unnecessary complications.

Follow along. You can do this too.

Hard-wax oil isn’t bad. It’s just overrated.

It looks beautiful, feels natural, and makes localized repairs relatively easy. Those are real advantages.

But I regularly hear from owners of beautifully built custom tables that are only a year or two old—and the wear is already showing. I constantly get requests to have the piece refinished. The table didn’t fail. The finish and the owner’s expectations were mismatched.

A maintenance finish only works for someone willing to maintain it.

RAW WOOD IS LYING | No. 001

First up: Quarter-sawn oak.

Raw wood only tells part of the story. Watch what happens when the finish brings out the grain, figure, and character hiding beneath the surface.

No stain. Just the natural beauty of the wood coming to life.

This is the first in a new series exploring different wood species and how dramatically their appearance can change with a finish.

Follow along for more wood reveals, refinishing tips, and lessons from the workbench.

Sometimes the smallest steps save you the biggest headaches.

Before stripping a piece of furniture, I take a minute to seal off the drawer openings with blue tape. It keeps chemical st****er from finding its way inside and creating another problem to solve.

It’s a simple precaution, but after 26 years at the bench, I’ve learned that good preparation makes everything that follows a little easier.

Remove tomorrow’s obstacles while they’re today’s small problems.

Follow along for more practical refinishing tips from the bench.

26 years at the bench, and I’m still learning.

I’m Chris, the guy behind Kunicki Restoration.

I’ve spent most of my professional life restoring furniture, solving problems, and figuring out what works (and occasionally what doesn’t).

I’m here to share what I’ve learned, pass along practical refinishing tips, and hopefully build a community of people who appreciate the craft.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional, just getting started, or simply enjoy watching old furniture come back to life, there’s a place for you here.

Bring your questions, your experience, and your opinions. We’ll throw in a little behind-the-scenes nonsense along the way.

Follow along. Let’s get after it!

Even furniture deserves a little jewelry. 💎

The right hardware can bring an entire piece together. Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

I’ve always thought of k***s, pulls, and hinges as the jewelry of furniture.

What do you think? Original hardware or something new?

Alright, now it’s YOUR turn to teach me something! 😂

I’ve got a restoration project coming up that’s going to require some wood bleaching.

I’ve got my methods, but I’m always curious about what other people are using and what they’ve learned along the way.

So I’m asking for help!

What wood bleaching products do you swear by? Any tricks, techniques, or lessons learned the hard way?

Good advice, bad advice, even a horror story or two. I want to hear it all.

Drop your recommendations in the comments. I’m all ears! 👇

Before you reach for a can of stain, take a good look at what’s already in front of you.

Wood isn’t a blank canvas. It’s already bringing color to the project.

Warm? Cool? Red? Orange? Yellow?

Understanding your starting point is the first step toward getting the color you actually want.

I call it Step Zero.

Here’s my question: What’s the hardest wood species for you to color match?

I’m curious to hear what gives everyone trouble.
