Measure the space at the foot of your bed, not just the wall it goes against.

This dark sleigh bed on our Eastman floor has a footboard that curves outward a little, the way sleigh frames do. It gives the bed a classic, finished look, and it also takes up a few more inches of floor than a flat frame. If a door or dresser sits near the foot of your bed, leave yourself enough room to walk past comfortably.

It's set up with a new mattress still in the plastic, so you can see how the frame and mattress look together. Bring your bedroom measurements when you stop by and we'll help you figure out what fits.

Two wood tones, one easygoing bedroom.

This bed on our Eastman floor pairs a weathered gray frame with lighter cream panels, and the dresser and mirror beside it are finished the same way. It's a nice middle ground if you don't want a room that's all dark wood or all white. It's set up with a new mattress still in the plastic, so you can see how the whole bed comes together.

Bring your own pillow when you come mattress shopping.

It sounds a little odd, but the pillow you sleep on every night changes how a mattress feels under your head and shoulders. A thick pillow on a firm mattress feels very different from a flat pillow on a softer one, so testing with your own shows you what you'd actually feel at home.

Our Eastman mattress row is set up so you can try several in just a few minutes. Toss your pillow in the car, lie on your usual sleeping side for a couple of minutes on each one, and notice which one your body settles into.

Sit on the edge of a bed before you lie down on it.

When you sit on the side of a mattress, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees about level with your hips. That height makes getting in and out of bed easy. Too low, and you're pushing yourself up every morning. Too high, and you're hopping down.

Bed height comes from two things: the mattress itself and the frame or base under it. This one on our Eastman floor sits on a wood-and-metal frame, so it's a good place to try the sit-down check.

How you feel when you first get out of bed says a lot about your mattress.

Sore shoulders or hips in the morning can mean the surface is too firm for the way you sleep, especially if you sleep on your side. A stiff lower back can point the other way, toward a mattress that lets your middle sink too far. Neither one is a sure thing, but it's a useful clue to bring with you when you shop.

Is your little one about ready to trade the toddler bed for a big-kid mattress?

Most families start with a twin. It fits easily in a kid's room and leaves floor space for toys and homework. If you'd rather buy once for the long run, a full gives a growing child more room to stretch out through the teen years, plus a spot for you to sit beside them at story time.

One thing that tends to help: let your child help pick it. A kid who chose their own bed is usually a lot more excited to climb into it at night.
