The first round of shutters from the historic Penelope Barker House are making their way into finish, and they’re starting to look sharp.

It’s always satisfying to take something worn and weathered, restore it, and give it another lease on life. There’s a lot of work that goes into a restoration like this, but seeing them start to come back together makes it worth it.

Historic restoration is something we take seriously here at Down East Wood Works, and we take a lot of pride in preserving pieces like these for years to come.

A large batch of custom 5-panel and 4-panel doors is coming together in the shop. This has been a fun project—we’re replicating the original doors throughout our client’s home using traditional mortise-and-tenon construction, keeping the character of the originals while building them to last.

Whether you need new doors built, an existing door replicated, or a completely custom entryway designed and built specifically for your home, that’s one of the things we specialize in here at Down East Wood Works.

Stop by the shop and see what we can build for you.

No two days in the shop ever look quite the same. Various forms of architectural millwork—from exterior balusters and louvered cypress gable vents to stacks upon stacks of milled poplar for the large number of interior doors we’re currently building. Couple that with a few furniture repairs and a little of this and that, and that’s how we do it here at Down East Wood Works.

Come check us out and see how we can help with your next project.

Wrapping up another full custom cabinetry installation.

For this project, we carried key elements from the homeowner’s existing architectural millwork into the design and paired them with a custom finish to ensure the new cabinetry feels like it has always been part of the home. It’s those details that make a full custom project truly one of a kind.

If you’re looking for custom built-ins, cabinetry, or furniture designed specifically for your home, stop by and see us. We’d love to help bring your ideas to life.

It took me a couple of years to understand it.

The reason we do what we do is simple: we care.

We care about the client who trusted us with their project. We care about their vision and the responsibility of bringing it to life. We care about the craftsmen who came before us and the standards they left behind. We care about the details, even the ones no one else will ever notice.

For a long time, I wondered why I was willing to put so much time and effort into a piece that most people would never fully appreciate. Then I realized it isn’t about recognition.

It’s about respect.

Respect for the client. Respect for the craft. Respect for the work.

Being a craftsman is personal. It’s emotional. Every one of us carries it a little differently, but I think the one thing we all have in common is that we care.

Sometimes it takes a couple of years to understand that.

It took me a couple of years. I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
