If you’re still pre-rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, you might actually end up with dirtier dishes.

Modern dishwashers have turbidity sensors that detect how dirty the water is. If you rinse dishes perfectly clean beforehand, the machine runs a shorter, weaker cycle that can leave detergent buildup inside. However, leaving large food chunks can tear filters or clog the drain pump.

Instead, just scrape food bits into the trash and load. Every few months, twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under hot water to keep the drainage lines clear.
