The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs
The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs is a confederation of Hawaiian Civic Clubs located throughout the State of Hawaii, Alaska and the Continental United States. It is the oldest community bases, grass roots Hawaiian organization in Hawaii. The first Hawaiian Civic Club was formed by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole in 1918. Prince Kuhio, who was serving as the Territory of Hawaii's Delegate to the United States Congress, realized that if the Hawaiian people were to survive under the new political and economic order dominated by the United States, they would need new and vibrant leaders for the future. The purpose of this first club was to create an open forum for Hawaiians to discuss and take action on matters of importance affecting the welfare of the Hawaiian people, to perpetuate the language, history, music, dances and other cultural traditions of Hawaii and to train leaders for the Hawaiian community and community at large. All of the association's member clubs retain their own autonomy to plan and implement their own annual activities provided they operate within the parameters of the Association's Constitution and Bylaws. The association sponsors numerous activities during March of each year to honor its founder and serve and promote the interests of the Hawaiian community. Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs
