Hello Everyone! 😊

One of the things I love about furniture restoration is that every piece has a story — and sometimes the restoration process uncovers even more of it.

I've been working on this Stickley & Brandt garden bench from 1903 all summer. At some point in its life, this beautiful piece was used outdoors as a garden bench, and years of exposure to Northern Michigan weather left it in need of quite a bit of attention.

I've slowly worked through the stripping, sanding, repairs, and all of the carved details. With a piece that's been around for more than 120 years, there's a lot to be careful with.

My client has also been researching the history of the bench and has been in contact with the Stickley Museum in New York to learn more about how pieces like this were originally finished.

We're getting close to the final step now — choosing the stain. We've found a finish we really like, but we're going one shade lighter so the carved details remain visible instead of getting lost in a darker color.

After spending most of the summer bringing this one back, I'm hoping to have it finished later this month, before winter sets in.

This is what I enjoy most about restoration. The goal isn't to make an old piece look brand new. It's to preserve what makes it special and give it another few generations of life.

This piece is taller than me (little over 6ft!) and has a lot going on. 😂

Lots of glass, small display compartments, ornate details and a really interesting old-world look. My first thought was that it could make a pretty incredible bathroom/medicine cabinet, apothecary cabinet or display piece.

✨️You never forget your first one.✨️

This little green cabinet was my 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 — and honestly, it taught me a lot.

What started as an ordinary brown cabinet turned out to be particle board with a wood-look surface, so the original plan to refinish it went right out the window.

Instead, I changed direction.

New feet. New hardware. A completely different finish. Even a custom drawer liner.

And years later, that little cabinet is living its second life as a 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐦.

Looking back, this project taught me something I still use today:

And yes — I still paint furniture, too. 😉

✨️ Another furniture restoration brought back to life! ✨

These Ethan Allen chairs had definitely seen better days, but they had great bones and were worth saving!

We strengthened the chairs, repaired and glued the joints, secured everything back where it belonged, and color-matched the paint to bring them back to their original look. 💪🪑🎨

The goal wasn’t just to make them look better — we made them much stronger and ready for many more years of use! 😊

Sometimes the hardest part of restoring a piece isn't doing the work — it's deciding what the finished piece should look like.

This table had a strong red/orange tone that didn't quite work with the client's existing chairs and the look they wanted for their home.

Rather than choosing a stain from a color chart and hoping it looks right, I made 5 different finish samples directly on their table leaf.

Tomorrow, they're taking the leaf home so they can see the samples in their own home, next to their chairs, under their own lighting.

That way, they can see exactly how each option feels with the rest of their furniture before we refinish the entire table!

**That's an important part of restoration.**

The goal isn't simply to make an old piece look “new.”

It's to create a finish that works with the furniture, the room, and the way you actually live with it.

Once they've chosen their finish, I'll use that direction to refinish the rest of the table.

𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

I just picked up this Kuolin table and the first thing I noticed wasn’t the tired finish.

It was the 𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹, the 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀, the 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁-𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗳, and the overall construction. 👀

Someone else saw a table they didn’t want anymore.

𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁. 🔨🪵

So now I’m trying to decide what direction to take it:

1️⃣ Restore the original wood
2️⃣ Give it a completely new finish
3️⃣ Paint the base and refinish the top
4️⃣ Something unexpected

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲?

I love projects like this because every piece presents a different challenge. Sometimes you know exactly what a piece needs. Other times, you have to look past years of wear and figure out what is worth bringing back.
