🎃 A Spooktacular Trunk or Treat! 👻

What a BOO-tiful day in Franklin Lakes! We couldn’t have asked for better weather or a more wonderful turnout for our Franklin Lakes Mayor’s Wellness Campaign Trunk or Treat!

Our amazing volunteers went all out decorating trunks and setting up tables, creating a fun and festive afternoon for everyone. The children looked fantastic in their creative Halloween costumes, and our costume parade around MUNI Field gave everyone a chance to show off their Halloween spirit! From the parade to trick-or-treating, the smiles, laughter, and excitement made the day extra special!

A special shout-out to our community supporters:

🥋 Elite Martial Arts – We truly appreciate your generous donation of water for everyone! Your students also put on an incredible martial arts demonstration that was a highlight of the day!

🍕 Uncle Louie’s Pizza – Always a community favorite! We love your pizza and appreciate your continued support of our events!

❤️ Our fantastic coordinators, Elina, Elisa, and Yolanda – Your dedication, hard work, and behind-the-scenes planning helped bring it all together. We are so fortunate to have you!

To all the families, friends, and neighbors who joined us, your enthusiasm and Halloween spirit made this event a memorable one!

The Franklin Lakes Mayor’s Wellness Campaign is about more than physical wellness. It’s about bringing people together, building friendships, creating lasting memories, and celebrating the wonderful community we share.

Another successful Trunk or Treat in the books! 🎃🍬👻

Happy Halloween! Until next year! ❤️

Halloween Safety Tips

It’s that time of year as children, ghosts and goblins take to the streets on Halloween to trick-or-treat, their risk of being injured by motorists increases greatly. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Halloween is consistently one of the top three days for pedestrian injuries and fatalities, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that children are four times more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than any other day of the year. Because excited trick-or-treaters often forget about safety, motorists and parents must be even more alert.

National Teen Driver Safety Week
October 18 - 24, 2026

The Franklin Lakes Police Department is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18–24, 2026.
It is important to discuss safe driving habits with teens every day, but Teen Driver Safety Week serves as an opportunity for parents and guardians to have a conversation with teens about safe driving habits. Teen drivers need to know the Rules of the Road before parents hand over the keys. Ultimately, it’s parents who are in control.
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of injury and death for 15-18-year-olds in the United States. In 2024, there were 85,947 teen drivers injured in traffic crashes. In 2024, there were 2,320 people killed in crashes involving a teen driver, and 752 were teen drivers themselves. Of the 2,320 people killed in crashes involving a teen driver, 478 were the passengers of a teen driver, and 280 (59%) of those fatalities were other teens riding with a teen driver. Of those teen passengers killed while riding with another teen driver, 61% were male and 39% were female. Click on website for full article. https://conta.cc/3TVMXEV

National School Bus Safety Week
October 19 - 23, 2026

The Franklin Lakes Police Department and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are urging drivers to slow down around school buses and stop when the school bus stop-arms are out and the red lights are flashing. School buses are one of the safest modes of transportation. However, injuries and fatalities do occur outside of or near the buses. This is often caused by a motorist who has failed to slow down and obey the bus’s stop sign, or to follow local traffic laws, stopping is the law whether approaching from the front or rear of the school bus. Nationally, school bus passing is illegal, and it poses a deadly risk to bus riders, child pedestrians, and their caregivers. Drivers should always come to a complete stop when a school bus stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing. Click on website for full article. https://conta.cc/4yS6HIy

Deer Safety When Driving - Drive with Extra Caution

The Franklin Lakes Police Department want to remind drivers to be extra vigilant on roadways this fall as the annual rut, or mating season, for white-tailed deer gets underway and daylight is limited during the peak commuting hours.
At this time of year, deer are more likely to suddenly enter roadways as bucks pursue does, increasing the risk for drivers to stop suddenly or be involved in collisions. Deer activity is more likely to occur during early morning hours and around sunset, when visibility may be limited, and more motorists are on their way to work commuting.
“Most of the collisions that deer have with motor vehicles in Franklin Lakes every year occur during the fall mating season,” said Chief Mark McCombs. “We urge drivers to be especially cautious and alert to the possibility of deer suddenly darting out into the roadways, as well as know how to reduce the risk of a collision and possible serious injury to themselves or others,” said Sergeant Denny Knubel.
Peak mating season for deer in New Jersey runs from late October to mid-December.
Awareness to the presence of deer will become even more difficult when daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday November 1st. This means that many commutes will then align with the time when deer are most active, and lighting conditions may be the most difficult for driving. Reduced lighting as well as sun glare can make it very difficult for drivers to see deer that are about to cross the roadway.
