Not every restoration needs to start from scratch!
This vintage Bassett dresser had definitely seen better days, especially the top and sides. But the drawer fronts were still in excellent condition, and I saw no reason to completely strip away a finish that didn’t need it.
So instead, I took a more selective approach. I sanded the top and sides down to bare wood and worked on getting the new stain to match the original drawer fronts.
I ended up using my own custom mix of General Finishes Antique Walnut and Nutmeg. I also gave the drawer fronts a very light hand sanding and applied the same stain to help bring everything together.
And that beautiful sculpted top drawer with its original brass accent? Definitely one of my favorite details on this piece!
Sometimes restoring furniture isn’t about stripping everything down and starting over. It’s about knowing what needs attention and what deserves to be preserved.
And I think this one turned out pretty darn good! 🤎
