At Tenuta San Jacomo, the line between art and reality becomes wonderfully blurred. Trompe-l’œil scrollwork and painted shadows frame an open window, while the landscape beyond looks almost too beautiful to be real.

Cypress trees, soft hills, and sunlight washing over the countryside—one painting quietly giving way to another. Where does the illusion end, and the scenery begin?

We are truly enjoying having window displays at our new location. It’s also nice to have these guys watching over the store when the dogs are home for the night! Doesn’t everyone need guard sheep???

The perfect recipe for beautiful design and complete relaxation, made even more special by the most gracious, kind, and attentive staff. The cuisine and views are out of this world!

Every room is filled with exquisite 17th- and 18th-century antiques, luxurious fabrics, and beautiful linens. Even the Italian bath products are sumptuous, with an irresistible amber fragrance rich in labdanum. Every detail feels thoughtfully chosen.

Be warned: staying here will spoil you for anywhere else!

We were sent off with sincere hugs, and both my husband and I nearly cried when we left. An extraordinary place that we will remember with so much affection.

From the fountains of Rome to the bath at Old Plank…

Some design ideas are simply too good to disappear.

Walking through Rome, we were struck by this monumental stone fountain basin — its beautifully exaggerated scale, sculptural ring handles and classical proportions immediately brought to mind the extraordinary carved marble tub at Old Plank. The resemblance speaks to something we love about antiques: great design has a long memory.

The massive stone basin, the bold rings suspended from carved brackets, the weight and permanence of the material — elements rooted in the classical world continue to reappear in European decorative arts and architecture generation after generation.

Our marble tub takes that monumental language and brings it indoors — transforming something almost architectural into an unexpectedly luxurious and wonderfully eccentric object for the home.

Rome has its fountains. We have our bathtub.

And frankly, we’re rather fond of ours.

A dressing table in brass, with a triple mirror that folds in at the sides and a pair of lights on scrolled arms above.

The frame is slender to the point of looking drawn rather than built. A stone top, a single dark drawer with a recessed pull, and mirrors arched at the top rather than squared off.

A cockatoo, cast in metal and finished in gold, standing on a turned black base.

The crest is raised, the feathers are worked individually down the breast and back, and the head turns just off center so the bird reads alert rather than posed. It is the kind of object that holds a shelf on its own.

What a wonderful evening at Old Plank Antiques!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the Opening Night of Highwood Design Week such a success. From the organizers and creators who brought the event together, to the participating businesses, designers, guests, friends, and everyone who came out to experience our new Highwood showroom — thank you.

The turnout was fantastic, and it was such a pleasure to see the showroom filled with so many familiar faces, new visitors, and people who share our appreciation for art, antiques, interiors, and great design.

A special thank you to the Highwood Chamber and everyone behind Highwood Design Week for including Old Plank in this year’s celebration of “Design Is Everywhere.”

We were honored to open our doors and begin the week with all of you.

Thank you for making it such a memorable evening.

Old wood has already done its moving.
Wood expands and contracts for as long as it exists, but a board that has spent a century settling has very little left to do. It is drier, it shrinks less, and it is far less inclined to crack. That is why the tables get built from reclaimed stock, and there is a quiet satisfaction in a piece of furniture that is also an act of recycling.
