Your marine piling spec is probably costing your client an extra 15%.
UC5A, UC5B, or UC5C. The zone determines everything. And the Gulf Coast falls under UC5C, the highest marine hazard category in the continental US.
Specifying UC5B retention in UC5C water builds in a replacement cycle nobody budgeted for.
We broke down 5 cost-saving methods for marine contractors who want to tighten the piling spec without over-specifying or under-protecting.

Hurricane season starts June 1.
If you have a dock, pier, marina, or waterfront project still on the to-do list, this is the week to make the call.
The projects that hold up through storm season are the ones where somebody took the time to pick the right pilings, plan the framing, and build to code. Not the ones that got rushed in July.
We put together a pre-construction checklist covering flood zones, permits, piling materials, storm-ready design, framing, decking, and budget — everything you need to discuss before construction starts.

What is marine treated wood?
Marine treated wood is wood that has been pressure treated to the level required for use in salt water. The chemicals are forced deeper into the wood at higher concentrations to protect against the harsher conditions that saltwater environments present.
Common marine treated wood products include pilings, timbers, and lumber components used in marine and shoreline structures like docks, piers, bulkheads, and boathouses.
Not all treated wood is the same. If your project involves saltwater, you need marine-grade treatment. Using the wrong treatment level is one of the most common and costly mistakes in coastal construction.

Rotted pilings? Do not replace them. Repair them.
SnapJacket is the toughest and longest lasting option to preserve, repair, and protect rotted marine pilings. Even on a small project, SnapJacket saves you thousands on both labor and materials.
Here is why: SnapJacket installs around your existing pilings. You do not have to remove the old pilings, buy and install new ones, or rebuild your entire structure.
The vinyl sleeve surrounds the existing piling. The void is filled with concrete. The result is a new solid piling that is stronger than the original.
Available in 10, 12, 14, and 16 inch diameters. 25-year warranty. Each jacket can be installed in as little as five minutes with two people.

When it comes to marine structures, longevity is everything. EcoPile vinyl-composite pilings are built to outlast wood in every marine environment.
Impervious to wood-boring organisms. 25-year warranty. UV and IR resistant. Boat friendly. Zero leaching chemicals. Maintenance free.
The strength comes from an internal hexagonal truss system with interwined webbings of triangles. Most people who handle an EcoPile for the first time comment on how surprisingly solid and rigid they are.
Grooved retention rings lock the piling into the ground, preventing settling even during severe storms.
Building Products Plus is the exclusive distributor for EcoPile in Texas and Louisiana. No one else in the state carries this product.

Why is wood kiln dried before it is pressure treated?
Simple: you cannot put chemical into a cell that is already full of water. The moisture from when the tree was alive has to be removed first.
Wood goes into a kiln, a large enclosed building with heat and fans. The humidity builds up inside, then the vents open to release it. This cycle repeats until the wood reaches the right moisture content.
Once the cells are empty, the wood goes into a pressure vessel where treatment chemicals are forced deep into the cell structure. That is how you get long-lasting, protected wood.
Skipping this step or rushing it means shallow pe*******on and a shorter lifespan for your structure.

Galveston's Terramar Beach homes stand on Gun Barrel Pilings® from American Pole and Timber.
These elevated coastal homes needed structural pilings that could handle Gulf Coast conditions while delivering a clean, uniform look. Gun Barrel Pilings® checked every box: uniform diameter, no taper, stronger than comparable square pilings, and easier to install.
When your supports are visible, shape matters. And when your structure faces saltwater, hurricanes, and UV exposure year-round, material performance matters even more.
