It may not be obvious, but this lounge chair has three legs and comes apart to flat pack. It’s called the 3PC, designed by Josh Owen for Lazzoni.

Its typology is quite unique. I see it as related to safari chairs or campaign chairs where a sling hangs from a frame.

Made from high-end materials, the tubular frame is stainless steel and the sling is an aniline leather. The seating position is extremely low, and the headrest allows you to recline fully. There is also a matching footrest that Owen designed.

The unusual, goalpost-shaped seat frame is inserted through a secondary frame, which serves as the foot of the chair. The structure is very robust, made from welded stainless steel components. The leather sling acts like a slipcover with no connections other than sliding onto the frame.

Josh Owen is known for industrial design work that balances avant-garde, innovative ideas with functionality.

The architect designer of this chair insisted that his entire archive be destroyed upon his death. Robert Mallet-Stevens is largely known for his Villa Cavrois, which is his most notable piece of modernist architecture.

This is a fairly minimal stacking chair that was designed for the kitchen of that villa. It’s made from sturdy powder-coated steel, which at its time of design in 1928 was considered a more lightweight material than we were used to.

It’s a great early example of a modernist piece of furniture that was intended specifically for a piece of architecture—not as a piece of art or an artifact, but a functional object that was a part of a larger whole.

With many chairs fabricated from aluminum nowadays, this now reads as quite heavy, but also retains its authenticity in its original form of production.

Why was this sculptural chair named after two world-renowned designers, the architect Gaudí and Carlo Mollino? This is an avant-garde and arguably postmodern form that was born in the 1980s, yet still seems to have a lot of architectural and design relevance today. The designer of this chair is a guy named Oscar Tusquets, who’s actually the founder of the manufacturer BD Barcelona, a quite avant-garde design house based in Spain. The chair, first designed in 1987, was meant to demonstrate a sculptural expression in solid wood with contemporary machining. It utilizes solid hardwood components that are sculpted into a form that is at times both biomorphic and architectural. Moments like this look particularly skeletal, whereas here we see references to cathedral architecture through a buttress referencing Gaudí. Doing production of a chair like this before CNC technologies would have been nearly impossible, if not exceptionally difficult. Not unlike the Sagrada Família by Gaudí, which has been expedited hugely thanks to advances in technology.

The third floor of the Weise House was curated with several distinct design pieces. Two Swiss-made Lehni benches in anodized aluminum serve as a large coffee table. Surrounding the table are Marcel Breuer cantilever and tubular furniture pieces, including two with original Bauhaus canvas straps and one in wicker. A Lehni room divider screen made of anodized aluminum is paired with a floor lamp version of the Cube One light, which utilizes the USM Haller system to elevate the fixture. The room also features an F51N armchair, originally designed by Walter Gropius, with textiles designed by Katrin Greiling. Grounding the space is a rug designed by graphic and typography designer Ben Fehrman-Lee, which adapts a Bauhaus newsprint layout. Completing the room is a custom tall, skinny Lehni shelving unit in raw aluminum, featuring custom green cross braces.

Come visit alongside BARPHA this weekend from 11am-5pm Saturday and Sunday!

This is the second floor of the Weise House, a double-height space defined by an incredible brick wall of arched windows. The living room features key modernist designs, including Walter Gropius’ iconic F-51 cantilever chair and Sebastian Herkner’s asymmetrical Loja Light with its blown glass and paper-like shade. Lighting highlights include Christian Borger’s stackable MLS01 and Stefan Diez’s adjustable Ayno light, alongside rare wicker chairs designed by Franco Albini and made by Tecta.

The adjacent dining area showcases “T-Chairs” by Katavolos, Littell, and Kelley, crafted with thick belting leather slings and recognizable T-shaped bases. At the center sits a bespoke grid table by Christian Borger, paired with his custom grid-patterned rug designed for Rarify. Above, a custom chandelier designed by Frank Weise features exposed bulbs and a central slender metal lamp with a conical shade. Anchoring the room is the home’s unique two-layered spiral staircase, connecting multiple levels through inner and outer stairs.
