Fine woodworking has always been about patience, sharp chisels, and respecting the grain, but modern digital fabrication takes that craftsmanship to an entirely new level.

Behind the scenes at Open Grain Woodwork, our industrial 4' x 8' CNC router is running every week to solve complex design and manufacturing challenges for homes, offices, and commercial spaces. From one-off architectural pieces to multi-unit production runs, digital precision lets us expand what’s possible with solid hardwood:

Carved Bar Enclosures: Milling detailed brand medallions and integrated framing into custom ebonized white oak bar cabinets.

Massive Urban Street Grids: Routing multi-panel city street layouts with tight-tolerance sunken pockets designed to hold 3D-printed buildings.

Hospitality Flight Boards: Batch-producing custom bourbon tasting paddles with recessed glass wells, menu card troughs, and crisp engraved logos.

Custom Signage & Experiential Props: Carving dimensional wall art installations, micro-detail relief illustrations, and oversized display fixtures for major retail activations.

Whether your business needs bespoke tasting room accessories, an interactive architectural lobby display, or branded executive gifts, we have the digital infrastructure to scale and the artisan eye to make sure every board looks stunning. When 4-axis digital fabrication meets custom dressmaking, you get studio hardware that works as hard as it looks. 🪵⚙️

We recently partnered with Beatrice Forms to engineer and batch-produce 50 custom, screw-in neck finials and internal walnut anchor blocks for their 3D-scanned mannequins.

These aren't just decorative toppers—they're functional studio tools:
• Quick-Release Dressing: The threaded design lets sewists back the topper off in seconds to slip tight necklines and structured collars smoothly over the torso.
• Secure Clamping: Tightening the finial clamps the fabric cover against an internal walnut block, keeping everything stationary during heavy draping.
• Composite Craft: Milled from layered hardwood and clear plastic spacers on a continuous rotary CNC setup to create a distinct optical stripe.

Curious how we set up the rotary indexer, engineered the composite blanks, and handled precision threading for the run?

• Built-In Hardware: Front-mounted cast iron bottle opener ready for company barbecues or weekend getaways.
• Lower Storage Shelf: Slatted wooden base providing clearance for extra ice, beverage cases, or grilling accessories.

What happens when traditional Kentucky woodworking meets modern 3D modeling and printing? 🪵⚡️

At Open Grain Woodwork, we are constantly exploring new ways to push the boundaries of custom manufacturing. We’ve been brainstorming and rendering several future design concepts—purely experimental ideas sitting on our design bench—that combine high-end hardwoods with additive manufacturing.

Here is a sneak peek at three concepts we’ve been exploring:

🥃 Modular Bourbon Tasting Rings: Precision-milled wooden flight boards fitted with interchangeable, 3D-printed color-coded rings to easily swap out tasting menus and proof details on the fly.

🏢 Parametric Acoustic Wood Walls: Hardwood feature paneling integrated with 3D-printed geometric sound diffusers that act as acoustic baffles for modern corporate lobbies.

🏭 Interactive 3D Distillery Campus Models: Architectural centerpieces combining CNC-routed wooden terrain with detailed 3D-printed distillery structures.

Note: These are conceptual designs only and not currently in production!

From shop floor to downtown lobby—the 8' x 12' 3D interactive model of Downtown Louisville is officially complete and unveiled!

🏙️✨ In partnership with Work Architecture + Design and the Louisville Downtown Partnership, we turned 2 square miles of the city's urban core into a massive physical installation. Built at a 1:70 scale, this piece combines master woodworking, digital fabrication, and interactive urban planning.

Behind the scenes by the numbers:

The Base: Engineered solid walnut frame and walnut plywood sub-structure designed to break into 6 modular sections.

The River: A custom-molded, hand-poured "Golden Indigo" metallic epoxy Ohio River, CNC-cut to match the exact coastline curvature.

The City: Hundreds of 3D-printed city blocks running on 20-hour print cycles, featuring magnetic recessed bases so future developments can easily snap into place.

Quality Control: 100% inspected and approved by our shop cat, Pip 🐾.

The finished model is now open for public viewing in the lobby of 500W (500 W Jefferson St).

Want to see the full step-by-step process from digital blueprints and CNC cuts to the official September 17 unveiling?

Something massive is taking over the shop floor at Open Grain. 🏙️🪵

We’re combining traditional fine woodworking with digital fabrication to translate an iconic downtown city layout into a monumental furniture installation. We’re talking rich American walnut streetscapes, deep metallic-blue resin rivers, custom 3D-printed skyscrapers, and vivid block-by-block park layouts.

We are putting the finishing touches on the riverfront and urban green spaces this week, and the complete build drops next week alongside a full project breakdown!

Check out the behind-the-scenes details below and let us know in the comments: Which downtown skyline do you think we're building? 👇

From 14-foot executive boardrooms to classic 7-foot dining spaces, every custom build comes with its own set of engineering challenges and material choices.

In our latest blog post, we take you behind the scenes of two recent shop builds:

The Steel-Core Teak Powerhouse: A 14-foot architectural centerpiece built with an internal steel skeleton to support a 4-inch AV-integrated stone top, fully clad in clear teak with custom shadow-reveal legs.

The Aged Cherry Classic: A 84" x 40" dining table featuring hand-turned legs and a rich, aged patina achieved with a specialized finishing agent.

Whether you need a commercial-grade conference table engineered for heavy tech or an heirloom piece for your home, see how we bring raw lumber and steel together.

From 19th-century parlor antiques to modern dining hubs, every piece that enters our shop has a unique history worth preserving. Our latest blog post covers three recent restoration and repair projects:

1880s Victorian Side Table: Fully disassembled, repaired, and restained solid American walnut base with burl veneer and a restored marble top.

West African Wall Mask: Precision structural repair re-bonding a fractured bird crest while preserving its original dark finish.

Italian Gathering Table: Stripped, sanded, and refinished to erase 20 years of sun damage and bring a broken stool back into service.
