See if you can name all of the flowers! There are some that are admittedly tricky. Some of the flowers that I wanted to carve are too delicate to be on the face of a cabinet, and these also function as the drawer pulls, so they had to be smooth and pleasant to use. It was so fun (and tedious) to carve all of these, and it took at least a full workweek just for the flowers.

Thank you to a lovely client and designer for commissioning this work and being trusting of the flower addition, which wasn’t part of the original plan.

Entry cabinet in walnut. The overall design was by Dolina Logan Faulk Design, for a wonderful client whose home we’ve been working on for a few years. We chose crotch walnut veneers for the drawer fronts, and I added the carved flower drawer pulls as a special touch.

Most of the flowers are grown in Hawai’i, and I found the photos they’re based on digging through the 𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗞𝗢 instagram feed.

The drawer boxes are dovetailed walnut and the top right drawer has outlets and usb chargers.

Seaming veneers on a Saturday. This part is pretty easy because all of the hard work had been done in cutting these triangles to perfectly come together. When I say perfect, I don’t believe we can be perfect but I will say that we tried very hard to cut these pieces and I’m happy with the way they came out. That’s all I can ask for!

Coffee table in monkeypod. The cookie slab is from Maui, and the legs are stack laminated with monkeypod from all over Hawaii. Each leg was turned freehand. I marked roughly where the segments of each bead should be, and then turned the shape without any profile guide. I wanted them all to be a little different. The top on the other hand is a perfect ellipse thanks to the precision of the CNC. I think this design would be epic scaled up to a dining table.

Custom bed frame. Both the footboard and night stands had large radii, which always are fun to make in the shop. The client wanted push to open drawers, so no drawer pulls on these night stands. Built in sapele with a custom stain and finish. Night stands are made of thick resawn veneer for dimensional stability.

First part of the video is the drawer face with its integrated drawer pull. Before building any piece of furniture, we always send 3D renderings and drawings to the clients, which also makes building the furniture easier because it’s already been done once on the computer.

Some details still get discovered during the building process, like what to do about this drawer box that has an integrated drawer pull. On a deeper drawer, I would just start the drawer box underneath the drawer pull so the cutaway drawer face doesn’t interfere with the box. These drawer boxes were so small that I couldn’t possibly make it any shallower, so I had to figure out a solution. I matched the drawer face cutout with the front of the drawer box and then had to cut the side away as well, or you’d see the side of the drawer box when the drawer is closed. I think it turned to be a pretty elegant. Anyhow, just a small part in the process of building the best furniture we can for our clients.

Bunk bed installed! That 15’ long white oak beam had to sail from Oahu to Kauai and then fly in through the window to get into the room. All of the elements on the railing and ladder were hand hewn with a drawknife and chisels — definitely the most time consuming part of this piece and as it always goes, the parts with the greatest effort become the most special.

Good times, and a huge thank you to the crew who helped install this piece (indwell) and Philpotts Interiors for trusting us to bring their designs to life.

Custom platform bed made from sapele, with carved naupaka flowers. The carving was the most fun and exciting part of this piece. I love making beds. They’re complicated enough to stay interesting, and I think they’re an important piece of furniture in people’s lives. Design by the wonderful Philpotts Interiors, who did a beautiful job with this home.

Carved flowers for inlays and drawer pulls. Mostly in walnut for the next project, but I’m using mango in a couple of areas to match the walnut sapwood on the drawer faces of the cabinet that these are going to go on. All of this work should make for some really unique and beautiful drawer fronts. All of these flowers grow in Hawai’i, and so far we have anthurium, hibiscus, plumeria and naupaka. Also such a shame I can’t use the Tom Petty song for the audio
