One year ago this week, Phil and I walked into Taracea's showroom at High Point Market with our friend Stuart Wilkins, who owned Seville Home before us, and couldn't walk past it. A coffee table with every growth ring showing. A chess table. A pool table. And the Vela, Rasttro's ping pong dining table, the one Don Julian fell for on our floor earlier this month.

Two of them came home with us: Taracea's Mara coffee table, in ochre guanacaste and sand American oak, and the Vela. We placed the order before the day was out.

Since 1995, Taracea has cultivated and managed its own tree plantations to replenish the wood it uses. The Mara is on our floor in Leawood now, and you can order Taracea and Rasttro pieces through us. 📍 5205 W 135th St, Leawood

The Emerald City closes Sunday.

Dorothy was never trying to get back to Kansas. She was trying to get back to Auntie Em. The house was simply where Auntie Em happened to be.

Are curved sofas practical? Searches for them have more than doubled this year, so we wrote the honest answer.

A curve turns every seat toward the middle, which makes it a beautiful sofa for conversation. It also seats fewer people than its width suggests, and it isn't built for a Sunday nap unless you choose a one-arm curve with an open end. Float it in the room with a round table in front, and it becomes the place everyone gathers.

Every home deserves a little grace.

Kansas City Ballet came to our Leawood showroom, and we haven't looked at our mirrors and sofas the same way since. Balance, light, and somewhere soft to land after the curtain: it's what we want every room to feel like.

Hosting this season? Give your guests a chair that turns toward the conversation.

Swivel chairs let everyone face the story by the fireplace, the game or the kitchen island without dragging a chair across the rug, and searches for them are up more than 70% over last year. Our new guide covers swivel vs. glider vs. rocker, which base to pick, how much room a swivel needs to turn (plan on a circle about 4 feet across) and where to put one.

Your sofa starts here: a 350,000-square-foot factory in Dallas.

In August we spent two days inside the American Leather factory. It starts with a warehouse of hides stacked to the ceiling. Each hide is mapped on a screen and cut by machine, then stitched by skilled sewers. On the build line it meets its frame and cushions, and every piece is built to order. The sign over the door says it best: "Through these doors walk the finest furniture technicians in the world."

We came home with a lot of respect for the people who build them.
