A small piece of nature, preserved in time. Made in Kyoto by Usagi No Nedoko, each Sola Cube holds a real flower, seed, or plant inside clear resin, inviting a closer look at details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Displayed alone, gathered together, or set aglow with a Sola Cube Walnut Light Base, bring a quiet bit of the natural world indoors. With plants such as Chinese lantern, Japanese walnut, eucalyptus, and strawflower, they feel especially at home as the season begins to change and we say goodbye to summer.

From October 7th (Wed) to 11th (Sun), Tortoise General Store hosts a pop-up featuring Tamai Shoten’s tabi socks. Founded in 1889, Tamai Shoten has crafted tabi and socks in Japan for over 130 years, offering a modern twist on the traditional split-toe design.

Tabi, a traditional Japanese footwear, features a split-toe construction for a natural fit and ease of movement, originally worn with sandals like zori and geta.

The collection includes ribbed socks, short styles, tights, and cozy pile styles, each with a unique character due to the split toe. These socks can be paired with traditional footwear or everyday shoes like sneakers, loafers, and boots, adding a distinctive touch to each look.

New one-of-a-kind works by Haneno Suzuki have arrived at Tortoise. Each composition is carefully constructed from layered and woven paper, with repeating forms that recall baskets, nets, and tapestries.

Seen from a distance, the works feel almost graphic and architectural. Up close, their delicate edges, subtle shadows, and variations in color reveal the careful handwork behind each piece. The paper curves and overlaps as it moves through the weave, giving the flat material a quiet sculptural presence.
The new collection includes works in a range of sizes and patterns, each framed and ready to bring its own rhythm to a space.

Shigeki Fujishiro approaches everyday objects with a playful curiosity, distilling familiar forms to their most essential—and often unexpected—expression.
The newest addition to our collection is MAG MANEKI, Fujishiro’s minimal interpretation of the traditional Japanese beckoning cat. Hidden magnets connect its head, body, and arms, allowing each piece to be repositioned. Raise the right paw to welcome prosperity, or the left to welcome visitors.
Also back in stock are a selection of Fujishiro’s designs, including the Eiffel Stool, Knot Baskets, and Frames Mobiles—each exploring material, construction, and function with a lighthearted point of view.

A limited collection of ceramic pieces by Los Angeles-based artist Shoshi Watanabe has arrived at TGS. Crafted in small quantities, each piece has its own distinct form, color, glaze, and character. Subtle variations created through the making and firing process give each work an individual presence while allowing it to remain approachable and useful in everyday life.

Because the collection is limited and every piece is unique, we feel it is best experienced in person. We invite you to visit the store, spend time with the different forms and surfaces, and find a piece that feels right for you.

Born in Japan, Shoshi Watanabe first began working with clay as a high school student in Tokyo. After moving to Los Angeles, he studied biology at UCLA before returning to ceramics, earning his MFA in Ceramics there in 2014. Today, he maintains a studio practice in Los Angeles while also teaching and working with students at UCLA.

Watanabe's work reflects both his early exposure to Japan's rich ceramic tradition and the relaxed sensibility of life in California. His practice moves fluidly between functional tableware, objects for the home, and sculptural work, exploring the space between utility, material, and artistic expression.

The full collection is on view and available only in-store at this moment.

Introducing .project

Designed by Takuhiro Shinomoto of Tortoise, atik is a furniture collection shaped by a simple idea: a 75mm grid. Every proportion, joint, and angle is derived from this single measurement, creating forms that feel both familiar and unexpected.

Crafted from laminated offcuts of Hokkaido-grown Mizunara oak, each piece embraces the natural character of the wood—knots, grain, and subtle color variation included. No two pieces are exactly alike.

The debut collection introduces the first five forms, from a through e, each serving as seating, a side table, or a plant stand.

We are pleased to welcome bamboo rod builder Yudai Mochizuki back to Tortoise for the second edition of FLYFISHING CRAFTS by Yudai Maker.

As summer settles across California, many of us find ourselves paying closer attention to the spaces we inhabit, the landscapes we move through, and the objects we choose to live with. Whether in architecture, design, or craft, the most enduring works often deepen our relationship to the natural world rather than separate us from it. They encourage us to observe more carefully, appreciate the character of a place, and engage more fully with the environments that surround us.

This July, we are pleased to welcome bamboo rod builder Yudai Mochizuki back to Tortoise for the second edition of FLYFISHING CRAFTS by Yudai Maker, alongside returning guest Nobuyuki Sugito, founder of COMPASS and curator of vintage fly-fishing treasures sourced from around the world.
