Jammed up?
Tweaked?
Pinchy? Nervy? Outright painful?
It’s the worst.
___
I know what it’s like to be literally flat on your back because it’s so damn locked up.
And you likely weren’t even doing anything silly (maybe...😬). But why is it that you can be a fairly active person, pretty strong and capable, yet you pick up your kids toys, go for a cruisy jog or tagalong to the driving range with an old friend and next thing you’re crippled?

Thing is, the low back is SUPPOSED to be tight (i.e. stable), in that it stabilises your spine to create a strong base from which to move your legs and arms. Excess tightness however, not fun... and it comes from your body implementing protective measures due to weak midline muscles, or because your hips and thoracic spine are also tight. Those joints are MEANT to move, so if they’re jammed up then it messes with the sequence of mobility>stability>mobility>stability that our musculo-skeletal system prefers to function optimally.

Getting that sequence back in order is key.
Next time your back feels tight, don’t try to stretch it. Instead work on your hips and upper back (downstream and upstream of the low back) to relieve excess lumbar pressure.

**A tight back is one thing, but outright injury is a different story (and outside my scope to diagnose/treat here). These movements MAY be helpful if your low back is constantly tight, uncomfortable and weak, but be sure to check with a professional in real life if it’s more than that.**
