“Wood is universally beautiful to man. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials”.

A sublime T-shaped and extensive floor to ceiling floating glass pavilion, The Smith House is arguably one of the most beautiful designs built by modernist Case Study architect Craig Ellwood (1922-1992).
Originally built-in 1958 the Smith House was carefully restored to its original mid-century bones by Award-Winning architect Jim Tyler, who worked with Craig Ellwood in the 1960s-1970s.
In 2017, Beacon Hill Custom Carpentry was commissioned to meticulously replace all of the damaged mahogany wall panels and doors with new Sapele veneer. The kitchen and baths were completely renovated with new floating cabinets and laminates, built to Ellwood specifications. The original master bedroom built-in bed and attached desk unit, designed by Ellwood, was recladed and relaminated.
Thank you for kick starting our first extensive mid-century project in restoring this historical gem. Truly honored.

Go team! Super excited to announce that a year long project we worked on was awarded the Residential Design Award of Excellence!
“The Residential Design Award of Excellence is given for the restoration of Craig Ellwood’s Hunt House. In 2013, a demolition attempt was thwarted by local community outcry. A new, preservation-minded owner was found, and restoration began in 2018 with a team of Ellwood experts including James Tyler, FAIA, the firm’s Chief Designer after Lomax left in 1963, and a skilled team of architects, designers and craftspeople who had worked on three previous Ellwood homes. The team utilized the entire archive of acquired original plans, publicity, original furniture, and numerous iconic Marvin Rand images to gain a precise understanding of every aspect of the original construction. “ -do IMO o
It is an honor to be part of this historic moment.
