Can I use pressure treated wood in my vegetable garden?

Many older people will tell you that pressure treated wood is dangerous and will leak toxins into your soil. That’s because before 2004, lumberyards used chemicals like arsenic and chromium to treat their wood. Interestingly, reclaimed railroad ties contain some of the highest levels of these chemicals and should never be used for food growing purposes.

Today, twenty years later, wood available for retail sale is treated with safer substances and is generally considered safe to use in vegetable or herb gardens. Each piece of lumber comes labeled with an acronym for the process it underwent during pressure treatment.

However, organic gardeners should still opt for natural woods like cedar and fir, since soil surrounding pressure treated wood doesn’t meet organic standards. Fir and cedar wood, although not as durable and water resistant as ground contact, pressure treated lumber, will last significantly longer than untreated lumber.

This warmer weather is making us think of spring! This weekend, what about making a raised garden bed for planting herbs, vegetables, or flowers? This type of garden is great for older people who struggle to bend over to tend a traditional garden, or for teaching your kids to care for a garden. It's also apartment friendly; you can have a raised bed almost anywhere. And Mother's Day is coming up! This could be a thoughtful gift for a mother who loves gardening.

We went ahead and calculated the cost for lumber and supplies. If purchased from our Home Depot on Dixie, total cost for supplies comes to $113.90. Here's the link for instructions: https://www.ana-white.com/woodworking-projects/simple-raised-garden-boxes-janet-fox

Like a true romantic, Alec picked up these heart-shaped slabs just in time for Valentine’s Day. 😁 We’ll see what we decide to do with them!

We just finished a project for a local restaurant! A new startup restaurant requested several bar-height tables. We’re looking forward to watching their customers enjoy time with friends and family around these tables.

A customer requested two river table tops; he plans to install them beneath the windowsills in his party barn so that guests can set their drinks down when they’re playing pool. It’s a great idea! These reclaimed slabs are coated in countertop grade epoxy, so drinks won’t leave any watermarks. And… they’re kind of showstoppers. :)
