Ever wonder why this tiny Tiffany & Co. silver mustard pot exists?

Before mustard came in squeeze bottles, it had a much fancier place at the dinner table.

Mustard pots became popular in Britain during the 1700s as prepared mustard became more common. These small covered vessels were designed specifically for serving mustard and often included a tiny spoon and a removable glass liner to protect the silver from the condiment’s acidity.

By the 19th and early 20th centuries, mustard pots had become a standard part of formal table settings, sometimes included in elaborate cruet sets alongside oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.

The example pictured here is especially fun: a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver mustard pot, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1919. More than 100 years later, it’s a little reminder of an era when even the mustard got the fancy silver treatment. 😄

The pieces in this auction are from the Bolesławiec region of Poland. The area is known for its small sponge stamp patterns, usually in a classic cobalt blue. The “peacock eye” motif is what makes it really shine.
