Scraping, grinding and priming.
The disc grinder is pretty hefty but its adjustable so you only go as deep as you want. We made tools and sharpened them so we could get the loose paint on the butts of the siding. Used sharpened putty knives to get beneath bigger patches of paint the scrapers wouldnt pull. Its all about the shadows. Once its painted thats what gets noticed as the sun changes position. 90% of painting is prep work.

Sullivan house.
Siding primed, cut and bevelled, primed ends and installed. It was touchy, the aim was not to strip the house but use the siding wisely. It wouldve been easier to strip, yes. But thats not the job. So it takes time. On to scraping and grinding next.

Sullivan house.
The cedar clap boards were not the usual end grain butted together. These were tapered at 7°. Keep in mind, things were done different in the 1800s. Well, we started with a draw knife that I sharpened enough to shave my face with. As much as I like tradition, it was taking me at least 5 min to shape each taper. We found a jig for the table saw that could be set at our angle. The problem with that was that the clap boards are tapered bottom to top as well so getting the seam straight was a super frustration. I settled on measuring 2 inches from the long point in and used my random orbit sander with 40 grit sand paper. Got it down to 30 seconds per end. The boy would pull any damaged siding and give me the lengths and I would go cut, taper and reprime the ends before install. If you follow this story, youll see the priming later. Pretty interesting trying to replicate what old techniques were out there at the time. Renovation is sometimes more tidious and in need of inventiveness than a new build with modern techniques and modern tools. But, we the curious like the adventure.
