The curious little history behind the Mustache Cup…

There was a time when a gentleman’s mustache was serious business.

During the Victorian era, beautifully groomed—and often heavily waxed—mustaches were quite fashionable. There was just one problem: a steaming cup of tea or coffee could melt the wax and leave quite a mess.

Enter the mustache cup.

In the 1860s, English potter Harvey Adams is credited with creating a clever little ledge inside the cup called a mustache guard. The gentleman could sip through the opening while his prized mustache rested safely above the hot drink.

The idea caught on, and mustache cups became popular gifts for gentlemen. They were made in everything from simple everyday pottery to beautifully decorated porcelain with florals, landscapes, gilding and elaborate Victorian designs. Many were sold with matching saucers.

Today, these wonderfully quirky survivors are highly collectible—and part of their charm is imagining the very proper gentleman who once raised one to his carefully waxed mustache.

We recently gathered quite a collection of them, and seeing them all together was too good not to share.

A tiny piece of Victorian ingenuity…created entirely because a gentleman simply could not risk ruining his mustache. 🎩☕️

Antique embossed collar & cuffs box with the prettiest raised floral and scrollwork design. The creamy, timeworn exterior, ornate dark metal clasp, tiny brass hinges and that beautiful powder-blue interior make this such a special survivor.

Originally made to store a lady’s detachable collars and cuffs, it still has the interior forms/dividers intact—which is getting harder and harder to find. I especially love the elaborate Victorian-style lettering and all those little embossed details that wrap completely around the box.

There’s age, wear as shown, but I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s so lovely—faded, feminine and wonderfully old.

Perfect displayed with antique lace, sewing notions, old letters, jewelry or simply sitting pretty among your ironstone and favorite treasures.
