Down Through the Laurels 🏔️🪕 Andrew Marlin

10/05/2026

Step by step, another way into the music. More than ten years after we first released it, the original AT-1 Archtop Octave—mahogany back and sides, Italian spruce top—continues to find new hands and make new music. Built one step at a time, it’s an invitation to expand your range, follow a different voice, and see where eight strings might take you. A gateway to another destination—and everything in between. ✨

A summer appreciated for all the places the music carried us.
From festival tents to big stages, it’s been pretty incredible watching Northfields find their way into so much music this summer. Brian Oberlin at The Mandolin Carnival. Andrew Marlin with Watchhouse. John Mailander with Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers. Dylan Jones with Noah Kahan. Drew Emmitt with Leftover Salmon-and many more beyond these frames. We make instruments, but this community gives them somewhere to go. We’re continually grateful for the outstretched arms, open stages, and all the musicians choosing to make new music with something we made. Here’s to a summer well played-and all the places these eight strings still have to wander.

For anyone else who had a great summer playing your Northfield we’d love to see it! ✨

A little tension. A little shimmer. Somewhere new. Tune an octave mandolin like the bottom four strings of a guitar—Chicago calling. Octave pairs, wound strings, a little bouzouki chime, all blending into a Chi-Zouki soundscape. Cross-pick magic, eight-string chorus, chords blooming into atmospheric lushness. The EleOcto + Chi-Zouki. Where ya wanna go? ✨

No magic tricks. Just wood becoming something else. Bending, scraping, carving, sanding, staining, joining—following the grain until a wooden blank finds its shape and its voice. We’ve found a new rhythm in the work, from raw wood to making our own soundtrack. Lots more to come. ✨

DEM BONES
A throughline from the instruments that shaped us to the ones we shape today. Old bones, new ideas—structure, sound, color and feel, all connected.

This week at The Fretboard Summit.

Lean in a little closer.
Where the room falls away and the instrument takes over.
That’s where the good stuff lives.

Beauty in the wood, the hands, the faces, the focused eyes. A rhythm of making, a rhythm of playing—everything connected by the music.

You never know who you will run into at a guitar shop. Mike Marshall mikemarshall.official has a new bluegrass album coming out soon. Here he is quite a few years ago, picking one of our all time favorite tunes.
