Very special customers in Fairfax, VA, had their kitchen remodeled, and to tie everything together, they wanted a butcher block table. It needed to be the same width and height as their kitchen island, so it would seamlessly extend the island for a food preparation space.
Real butcher blocks showcase the wood’s end grain, which makes them the perfect chopping surface. They’re also more resilient to wear and tear and less likely to dull your knives. There are countless design possibilities for butcher blocks, using different woods to create beautiful colors and patterns. We agreed on a weave pattern using walnut and maple for the tabletop. I used white oak for the table’s base, adding thick, tapered legs and a convenient push-to-open dovetailed drawer. I finished the tabletop with RMP Finishes tung oil, which allowed the end grain to absorb several hand-rubbed coats, giving it a lovely patina.
The result is a stunning table with a unique tabletop that will be perfect for preparing meals for years to come.
