This is in Ka Lae, also known as South Point, on the Big Island of Hawaii. South Point is known for its exceptionally strong and persistent winds, which are significantly higher than the island’s average. The National Weather Service has reported sustained winds of 16 mph with gusts up to 23 mph in the area. The area is constantly exposed to the prevailing northeast trade winds and is so consistently windy that some local trees grow nearly horizontally due to the wind’s force.
