A lot of budget solid wood furniture is rubberwood. It comes from rubber trees once they’re done producing latex, and it’s nearly as hard as walnut. Don still thinks it sounds like a tire.

On this old oak piece the orange was all in the finish. One sanded stripe and the real oak was right there underneath. Worth checking yours before you get rid of it.
