When I got into ceramics I wanted so so badly to dig my own clay. The internet said you can find deposits in deep cuts of land and near river beds- places where the earth is exposed and you see the lower strata. I thought of a couple places like that, found what seemed to be clay-like soil, sifted rocks, debris and sand out and gave it a go. After I processed it, it looked like I made a ball of baby p**p. It was pretty elastic, but not great. It needed more structure so I added grog and a little ball clay and fired it. When I opened the kiln I was shocked that It came out this stunning orange-red terracotta. It’s so amazing that some back yard dirt could be fired into pottery and that with some simple processing I could be connected with a human tradition that goes back millennia. Also, later I found more clay by a riverbed that was a gorgeous gray-green (not baby p**p at ALL) and was very workable and also came out a terracotta color. WTF so amazing. Like wow, the EARTH, man.
