September at Base Manhattan: 19 gatherings in 30 days.

We learned our way toward the High Holidays. We welcomed a new year. We heard the shofar, served together, ate around long tables, broke the fast, built sukkot, celebrated inside them, and kept returning—as we do every week—to Shabbat.

More than four gatherings a week. And somehow, these are still only snapshots of what it felt like.

October may look a little quieter on the calendar. It isn’t quieter in the community. ❤️

What if this year, we didn’t just show up to the High Holidays — what if we showed up ready?

Over three Tuesday evenings in September, we’re gathering around our table for dinner, conversation, Jewish learning, and a chance to prepare for each holiday as it arrives: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot.

This is also an opportunity to spend time with the same group over several weeks — to ask good questions, share a meal, and actually get to know one another along the way, rather than simply attending a one-time event.

No expertise required. No perfectly articulated theology required. Just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to make a little space for reflection, connection, and preparation before the holidays come rushing in.

So, what exactly is Base Manhattan?

It’s not a synagogue. It’s not a class. It’s not a dinner party.

Though, to be fair, there will be quite a lot of dinner.

Base is built around a pretty simple conviction: Jewish life is something we make together.

Around a table. Over a text. While singing. While arguing. While celebrating. While showing up for one another. In the conversations that start during dinner and somehow keep going long after the plates have been cleared.

We want this home to be a place where you can bring your curiosity, your questions, your traditions, your ambivalence, your appetite, and your whole self.

You don’t have to know the right words.
You don’t have to already know the people.
You don’t have to have your Judaism figured out.

Just come in.

We’ll figure out the rest together.

Hi! We’re Erica + Dimitry. 👋

We’re the people opening the door, setting the table, making too much food, asking the big questions, and occasionally wondering where on earth we’re going to put everybody.

We’ve spent a lot of years building Jewish community, and somewhere along the way we became pretty convinced of something:

Jewish life happens in relationship.

It happens when someone remembers your story. When a conversation keeps going long after dinner is over. When you learn something that rearranges you a little. When you walk into a room knowing nobody and leave having found someone you want to see again.

That’s the kind of Jewish life we want to make here.

So together with our family, we’re opening our home as Base Manhattan — a place for Shabbat, Torah, holidays, questions, singing, celebration, friendship, and a whole lot of sitting around the table.

Hey. Shalom. Privyet. It’s been a minute. 👋

If you’ve been following this account for a while, you probably know us as Base Harlem.

That chapter held a lot: crowded Shabbat tables, late-night conversations, Torah, singing, holidays, new friendships, very full dishwashers, and years of figuring out what it means to build Jewish community one relationship at a time.

And now, a new chapter.

We’re Erica Frankel and Rabbi Dimitry Ekshtut, and together with our family, we’ve opened a new home for Base Manhattan: a gathering place for Jewish young adults from across New York City.

We’ll gather here for Shabbat and holidays, Jewish learning, service, questions, celebrations, joyous encounters and—have we mentioned?—community.

If you were part of the Base Harlem story, we’re so glad you’re still here. You helped make this next chapter possible.
