John Saladino loved a good story. Looking at the world he created — a romanticized one adorned with persistent beauty — that shouldn’t be surprising. Because, when told properly, stories can be the most romantic and beautiful form of communication we have. By reading and listening to them, John learned. While telling them, he taught. As with all his endeavors, the latter was never done mundanely. Where’s the beauty in that? When John told a story, he did so passionately, with the intention of evoking emotion from whomever his audience happened to be; a crowd, friends, family. Emotion binds. It connects. And Mr. Saladino’s passion, his emotion, can be felt most deeply in the beautifully amalgamated homes he created. Each tells a story, uniquely Saladino, and undeniably memorable. That word, memorable, is one of the many flattering labels people have placed on John’s work. It also happens to be, I believe, the perfect description of John Saladino, the person. Just ask anyone who met him. I can almost guarantee they’ll be quick to share the experience, despite how brief the encounter may have been or the amount of time since. Why? Because John had the intuitive gift of creating memorable experiences wherever he went. It was his way of adding beauty to the world and giving us something to hold on to — the conversations, the experiences, the designs! And by doing so for others, in turn, created cherished keepsakes in his own life, ones he coveted as much as the art and antiquities that filled his home. He remembered each and every one of them, from the chance meetings to lifelong friendships. They all became part of his story . . . One we will always remember.

It’s always a treat to see how Houston based designer, Kara Childress, uses our furniture. In one of her recent projects — a delicately orchestrated environment of rough stone and historic wood — Kara paired up our Harley Chairs to produce an enticingly approachable vignette in this grand scale room.

Scale is a fundamental element that cannot be overlooked in a rush to get to the more “glamorous” features of design, like color and texture. Here, we’ve worked from large to small, starting with an oversized High Back Sofa, to a pair of Tejas Chairs, antique arm chair, coffee table and ottoman, down to the accent pieces that include a narrow swing arm lamp and silver table tray. The larger pieces were upholstered to soak into the walls, while the leather and wood evoke the warmth brought up from the floors. This all works towards the goal of producing a space that has the same, scaling down, effect on anyone who visits; allowing them to appreciate the breadth of the room, while inviting them in to become part of something more intimate.

Collecting is one of John’s greatest passions. But simply calling the objects he’s acquired “possessions” is a vast understatement. They’ve held places of significance in his life and home while under his watch as steward. In turn, he has become part of a much broader historical timeline, which is forever attached to their existence.
This troupe of ancient art has been meticulously selected from John’s personal collection; designed to form an encompassing exposition dedicated to his admiration of humanity’s creative beauty throughout history.
We are excited to offer you the opportunity to etch your name, alongside John’s, in the timeline of these pieces, as we release the first group of Venerable Echos.
