Furniture restoration is rarely just about what you can see.

The restoration of the George Frisbie Hoar bookcases required consideration of the structure, joinery, surfaces, hardware, existing finishes, and previous repairs. Each of these elements helps determine what requires treatment and what should remain.

That distinction is an important part of professional restoration. The goal is not simply to refinish a piece, but to address its condition while respecting its existing materials and craftsmanship.

Restoration can take us well beyond traditional furniture.

This steering wheel is a perfect example. Whether we are working with a chair, an heirloom, or something a little less expected, the process begins with the same questions: What is it made from? How was it constructed? What has changed with age and use? What should be repaired, stabilized, or preserved?

There is no universal restoration process. The piece itself determines the approach.
Have something unusual that needs professional care? Bring it by Trefler’s for an evaluation.

Small piece. Very small details. Often, a surprisingly complex repair.

Figurines can include delicate fingers, flowers, clothing, facial features, accessories, and other projecting elements. A single break may affect both the structure and the decorated surface around it.

Restoration may therefore involve rebuilding missing details, carefully shaping repairs, and integrating color work with the surrounding decoration.

Inherited a collection? Before deciding what to restore, start by understanding what you have.

Documenting and assessing each piece helps identify what needs immediate stabilization, what may benefit from restoration, appraisal, custom storage, or conservation framing, and what may simply need proper care. Not everything needs treatment at once, and some pieces may not need treatment at all.

A professional assessment can help establish priorities based on condition, significance, intended use, and preservation needs.

For large sculptures and specialized works, the job doesn’t necessarily end when restoration is complete.

Safe installation requires planning around the piece’s size, weight, materials, condition, and final location. Careful handling and placement are part of protecting the work through the final stage of the process.

When the details are this intricate, every repair matters.

This Chinese cloisonné jardiniere came to Trefler’s with areas of cracked and missing enamel. Before any color work could begin, the damaged areas were carefully sealed and filled to create a stable foundation for the repair.

Our team then worked by hand to color the repaired areas, carefully referencing the surrounding enamel, patterns, and decorative details.

Restoration at this scale is not simply about filling what is missing. It requires precision so the repair works with the original craftsmanship rather than distracting from it.

Sometimes preservation is about what happens when a piece is not being used.

Books, paper, and delicate collections can be affected by repeated handling, movement, dust, and their storage environment. A custom enclosure provides support designed specifically around the dimensions and needs of the piece inside.

It is a simple principle of preventative conservation: good storage can help reduce avoidable damage before restoration becomes necessary.

Summer may be ending, but months of sunlight and heat can leave their mark on antique furniture.

Check for fading, changes in sheen or finish, loose joints, and lifting veneer, especially by comparing exposed areas with sections that were shaded or covered.

Then prepare for the colder months. Radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and changes in indoor humidity can place additional stress on wood, veneer, joints, and finishes.

Notice changes in your furniture after summer? Check the link in our bio to schedule an end-of-season assessment.

Not everything that belongs in a frame begins as a flat work of art.

This Soviet-era shawl carries family history, but its weight, fibers, flexibility, and condition require a very different framing approach than a print or painting.
Proper support allows the textile to remain visible while making its long-term preservation part of the framing process.

Have a textile or family piece you’d like to preserve and display? Bring it to Trefler’s for an assessment.

Every antique presents a different combination of materials, construction methods, age, wear, and previous repairs.

Hand restoration allows our conservators to adjust the treatment as the work progresses.

Changes in resistance, alignment, surface condition, or material behavior can be identified and addressed with greater control.

This careful approach helps preserve original components and avoids forcing a standardized process onto a piece that requires an individual solution.
