🪚🎃 I WANT TO PLAY A GAME…

It’s called WOOD YOU RATHER?

We’ve rounded up three wonderfully weird walnut slabs, each with its own quirks, character, and questionable intentions. 👀

🅰️ The Haunted One — A mysterious hole and some seriously gnarly edges.

🅱️ The Wild Card — Twists, knots, and a shape that refuses to follow the rules.

🅲️ The Heartbreaker — Dramatic grain and curves in all the right places.

The rules are simple:
Pick A, B, or C. Tell us WHY you’d choose it and what you’d turn it into.

No wrong answers. Just questionable taste in wood. 😈

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT 🔥 This isn’t Josiah’s first rodeo! 🤠

Josiah stopped into Urban Slab & Timber for epoxy for his latest project — and then sent us this.

That black river running through the center is already killer, but we LOVE that he didn’t try to hide the natural void in the slab. Filling it dark turned what could have been a “flaw” into one of the coolest details in the whole table.

And that base? 👀 Full metal from Fractal Designs. Josiah said the pieces fit together incredibly smoothly and gave them a huge recommendation.

One of our favorite parts of this business is seeing what people make after they leave our shop. Sometimes we supply the slab. Sometimes it’s epoxy, finishing products, advice, or a little troubleshooting along the way.

The creativity belongs to them.

Nice work, Josiah. This one turned out wicked. 👏

Have something you made with materials from Urban Slab & Timber? Send us a picture. We want to see it.

The Marv’s crew often brings us tree ears… but this time they brought back something with the littlest ears to date. 🥹🐾

We’re lucky to have a crew that brings us more than the logs that become our local inventory. They bring us the stories, too — the clients, the neighborhoods, and a little bit of where each tree came from.

This time, Corey found three tiny kittens tucked into a debris pile at a job site and, naturally, they came home too. ❤️

He’s fostering them while they’re being adopted through the Nebraska Humane Society. Two have already found homes, with one little orange boy still looking for his.

We love the wood they bring us, but we’re pretty fond of this delivery too. 🌳🐾

Good save, Corey. ❤️

There’s an artist hiding in our woodshop. 👀

If you’ve spent much time at Urban Slab & Timber, you may have met the man behind Zann Rictus without ever realizing it.

Those who know his secret identity can keep it to themselves. 😉

Zann has always considered himself an artist first—a painter, sculptor and maker with decades of experience in carpentry, fabrication and industrial arts.

And his day job is pretty incredible, too.

At Heartland Scenic Studio, he helps create the kinds of things most of us only get to see once they’re inside a museum or exhibit—immersive displays, interactive environments, and even remarkably realistic dinosaurs. The kind of work that requires an artist’s eye combined with some serious fabrication skills.

But when Zann is creating his own work, the process is different.

He doesn’t necessarily pick up a piece of wood already knowing what he’s going to make.

He participates.

In fact, his artistic mission can be summed up in those two words:

“To participate.”

He begins with materials—often reclaimed pieces from his fabrication work, wood from Urban Slab & Timber, and other things that catch his attention—and starts experimenting.

Cutting. Arranging. Combining. Taking something apart. Putting something else together. Responding to what happens.

The work takes shape through an ongoing conversation between the artist and the material, rather than forcing the material toward a predetermined result.

And when Zann is finished, the participation doesn’t stop.

Now you enter the conversation.

The artist, the material, the finished work and the person standing in front of it all bring something different to the experience. What catches your eye? What do you recognize? What does it remind you of? What do you see that someone else might not?

That’s part of the art.

A handful of Zann’s reclaimed-material sculptures recently spent some time on the walls of the Chip Fryer Gallery at Clover24, and several have now returned to Urban Slab & Timber, where they’re on display and available for purchase.

We love having them here because, in a shop full of wood waiting for its next life, Zann is a pretty wonderful reminder that what something can become isn’t always obvious when you first look at it.

So next time you’re digging through the slab racks, look up.

Take a minute with his work.

Participate. See what you see.

I’m always telling people: sometimes you have to let the live edge speak to you. 🫵

Let it tell you what it wants to become—or that it needs to come home with you. 😂

Apparently my dad follows the same mode of operation.

These chunky pine pieces were cutoffs from a mantel project, and instead of letting perfectly good wood go to waste, he looked at them and saw… these. 🤗

Now we want to know what you see.

They’re roughly 20” × 20”, matching, unfinished, and substantial enough to go a lot of different directions.

Matching nightstands? End tables? Benches? Something we haven’t even thought of?

And then there’s the finish. Would you keep them light and natural, deepen the pine, or do something completely different?

$550 for the pair unfinished
$650 for the pair finished

So tell us: what are these pieces trying to become? 👇

Apparently Urban Slab & Timber is selling houses now. 😂

Okay… not exactly.

My sister Cecilia is selling her house, and this particular house has a little more Urban Slab in it than most.

Throughout the home you’ll find Eastern red cedar shelving and a live-edge mantle made from locally salvaged Urban Slab & Timber lumber. Pieces that could have been overlooked became permanent parts of a pretty special little house.

And honestly, the rest of the place has just as much personality.

Built in 1963, it has plenty of mid-century modern charm — original hardwood floors (finished with our fave- Osmo 😍), great natural light and mature trees — mixed with some wonderfully whimsical updates.

There’s a giant hand-painted sun. Mushroom wallpaper. A sultry, moody lower level. A bright blue oven. A pink front door. And, naturally, quite a bit of salvaged & live-edge wood. 🌞🍄🌲

It is decidedly not a gray-everything, cookie-cutter house.

And while the fun stuff gets most of the attention, quite a bit of the decidedly un-fun homeowner stuff has been taken care of too — including a 2024 furnace, newer windows with a transferable lifetime warranty, an updated electrical panel, a newer garage door system and spring, foundation reinforcement, and professionally maintained mature trees.

The location is convenient, too — near 90th & Maple, with easy access to 90th Street and the interstate.

And, importantly, not too far from Urban Slab. 😉

And yes… the house is actually for sale.

🏡 9507 Binney Street, Omaha
🌿 $240,000
🛏 3 bedrooms
🛁 1.5 bathrooms
📐 1,654 sq. ft.
🚗 Attached 2-car garage
🌳 Spacious fenced backyard

Cecilia is selling it For Sale By Owner, so if you know someone looking for an Omaha home with a little more personality 💖 than the average gray box, tag them below or send this post their way.

Here we go again… 😂

There are about 40 slabs in this picture.

And these were the LAST 40.

That brings the grand total to 160 slabs moved into the showroom in one week. 😅

Walnut, Russian olive, sycamore, cherry, birch, poplar and more — from big statement pieces to smaller project and charcuterie-board sizes.

Now we just have to finish sorting, pricing and finding homes for all of them.

The good news? You get to come dig through them without doing any of the heavy lifting. 😂

Come browse — no appointment needed, no pressure. There is a LOT of new wood to see.
