This was a new one to me. These ash logs have several elongated sections of damage just under the bark that had started to seal over, and the borer beetles stayed within the boundaries of those areas.

Maxed out the bandsaw mill with this log, not an inch to spare.

Good neighbors make work go more smoothly. Dan and shop dog Ellie ran this Siberian elm burl through the sander to get it ready for pickup. Ellie’s labor isn’t cheap though. She demanded a whole pocketful of treats before I was allowed through the door.

I’m making like this woodchuck and scurrying out of the shop for a few days. Closed Sept. 11–13, but back to wood chucking on Saturday. See you then!

I’ve been absent from this account—at least in any substantial way—for a long time now. While I went back to keeping regular hours at the shop after a few months, showing up in this space has been a different matter.

At first it was shock and grief that kept me quiet, the whirlwind of adapting, the uncertainty of how the business was going to move forward, whether I even wanted to run this business without my dad by my side. I was simply too raw to share anything publicly.

But as time went on, I noticed there was another reason I was avoiding posting: When I start posting regularly again, I’m going to watch the work my dad and I did together slowly disappear into the archives.

I’m still dreading that, but it’s time. Time to invite you all back into my little corner of the makerhood.

I’ll be sharing what’s new right now and give you some glimpses into what I was doing this past year and a half. There’s also things my dad and I never got around to sharing, so don’t be surprised to see his face here and there. He’ll always be part of the fabric of this company, and I’m going to keep talking about him.

So, officially, hello again. I hope you’ve all been well, and if you ever want to say hi in person, I’m here. No appointment necessary.

Taking a short spring break this week, so the shop will be closed April 3-7. I’ll be back at it next week. See you then!
