Candace Fitts Cerretani passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones Friday, October 16, 2026. A true daughter of the Village of Owego, Candace was born to Clarke C. Fitts and Caroline Pumpelly. Candy dedicated her life to Owego and the preservation of the history and culture of the Village. She graduated from OFA in 1968 and went on to Harcum Junior College, then graduated from Elmira College in '72. She returned to the area and cultivated her love of reading, working at the Coburn Free Library and John Spencer's bookstore, after which she worked as the Village bookkeeper for 30 years.

Honoring the generations who came before her, Candy spent many hours tending to her relatives' gravesites at the Evergreen Cemetery. Later in life she became an active member of the Evergreen Cemetery Committee. An avid lover of the outdoors, Candy spent much of her life on her family's property on the Southside at Pumpelly's Glen. Much of her youth was spent on horseback with her beloved horse Grenadier. Candy loved gardening, cooking, fresh air from her windows open at night, and any dog or cat that crossed her path. She had a profound love of history, inspired by her father who was recognized for his heroism as a WWII Airforce pilot.

In recent years you could find her manicuring the garden beds at St. Paul's, catching an OFA high school basketball game, at wing night at the VFW with the guys, or sitting on the front porch at Quaker Lake.

Candy is predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, Clarke and John, and two husbands, Steven McGavin and Joseph Cerretani. She is survived by her two daughters, Cally and Alicia; three stepsons, Casey, Conan and Seamus; her two sisters, Catharine Fitts Nobilletti and Darcy Fitts Chester; her aunt Barbara Fitts; along with dear daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and dear friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 23, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Owego, NY. A Celebration of her Life will be held Saturday, October 24th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Carriage House at the Pumpelly Estate, 44 Front St., Owego, NY. Private burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Owego, NY. In lieu of flowers, Candy asked that donations be made to Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepherd Road, Waverly, NY 14892 & SPCA, 2 Jackson Street, Binghamton, NY 13904.

Brendan L. Eastman, 36, formerly of Berkshire, NY, unexpectedly passed away Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Brendan is survived by his father, John D. Eastman II; his mother, May Davis Carson (John); his girlfriend, Jasmine Blaskiewicz; his three brothers; Matthew Eastman, Nolan Eastman, Davis Eastman (Katie); his three sisters, Kristi Eastman, Brittany Crispell (Steve), Kedrin Eastman (Dana); his eight nieces and nephews; Kimberleigh, Spencer, Trey, Vivian, Joscelyn, Jack, Ryder, C**t; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

From the beginning Brendan had a strong willed spirit that was unmistakably all boy. He had a natural talent for riding dirtbikes and was happiest on two wheels, or being outdoors fishing, gardening and snowboarding.

As Brendan grew older, life led him on a long and difficult struggle with addiction. It was a battle that brought hardship and heartbreak to him and those who loved him. While this may be part of his story, it was never the entirety of who Brendan was. Beyond that struggle was a son, a brother, and a man that tried his very best.

Brendan cherished the friendships and relationships in his life and the people who accepted him for who he was, and loved him unconditionally. He was kind, caring, and funny. He loved to make people laugh. He had a knack for seeing value in what others might overlook. He loved his dog Blue and took care of her sweetly. He will be missed tremendously and we will cherish the time we had with him.

Funeral services will be held on Friday October 23, 2026, at 10:00am at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Owego, New York with Pastor Jay Geistdorfer officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire, NY. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 22nd from 4:00-6:00pm at the funeral home.

A Life of Love, Compassion, and Perseverance

Barry Schecter was born in New York City in August 1950 to his loving parents, Louis and Frances Schecter. Raised in a family with deep Jewish roots, Barry grew up understanding the importance of heritage, family, and caring for others. These values would remain at the heart of who he was throughout his life. He grew up alongside his brother, Eddie, who predeceased him, and his sister, Sheila.

Throughout his life, Barry was a man of many talents, passions, and accomplishments. An ambitious entrepreneur and dedicated businessman, he built and operated numerous successful businesses, including AOK Fuel, car washes, a towing company, a truck stop, a restaurant, automotive repair businesses, and several Mobil gas stations throughout New York and Florida. His entrepreneurial spirit, determination, and willingness to take on new challenges were defining characteristics of his life.

By his side throughout these endeavors was his devoted wife of 45 years, Sharon. Together, they built far more than successful businesses. They built a life rooted in love, commitment, and family, raising their four children, Lisa, Harold, Jennifer, and Joshua. While Barry took great pride in his professional accomplishments, the family he and Sharon created was always his greatest source of happiness and pride.

After many years in business, Barry felt called to pursue a different path, one that reflected something that had always come naturally to him: helping others. Barry possessed a remarkable ability to understand people, recognize their struggles, and offer comfort, encouragement, and guidance during life's most difficult moments. He had a way of making people feel heard, understood, and valued.

In the late 1990s, Barry returned to school and earned his Master of Social Work degree from Marywood University. He and Sharon made the courageous decision to sell the businesses they had spent so many years building and begin a new chapter devoted to serving others. Sharon went on to become the Executive Director of the Tioga United Way, while Barry began his career as a social worker and therapist.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Barry was a dedicated and respected professor at SUNY Cortland, where he taught for over 20 years. During his tenure, he played an instrumental role in helping shape and strengthen the university's Health Department, leaving a lasting impact on both the program and the students it served. Barry was more than just a professor; he was a mentor, a role model, and a source of encouragement and inspiration to countless students. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, recognize their potential, and inspire them to believe in themselves. His passion for teaching extended far beyond the classroom, as he genuinely cared about the success and well-being of his students. For Barry, teaching was never simply about sharing knowledge; it was about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The lessons he taught, the wisdom he shared, and the kindness he showed will continue to live on through the many students whose lives he touched.

Barry dedicated himself to helping others navigate life's challenges. His compassion, wisdom, and genuine desire to make a difference touched countless lives. To Barry, helping others was never simply a profession; it was a calling and an expression of the person he was.

In the final chapter of his life, Barry faced perhaps his greatest personal challenge when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 75. While many might have viewed such a diagnosis as a reason to step away from their work or surrender to the difficulties ahead, Barry approached it with the same determination and resilience that had guided him throughout his life. He refused to allow his diagnosis to define him or diminish his desire to help others.

With the unwavering love, care, and support of his family, especially his devoted wife, Sharon, Barry continued moving forward. Remarkably, he continued seeing patients until just days before his passing, when he was no longer physically able to do so. Even while facing his own tremendous challenges, Barry remained committed to being a source of strength and comfort for others. His perseverance was a testament to his character and the extraordinary depth of his compassion.

Yet, as remarkable as Barry's accomplishments and life experiences were, they tell only part of his story.

Above all else, Barry's life was defined by love.

He gave love freely and wholeheartedly, and in return, he was surrounded by an extraordinary amount of love from those fortunate enough to know him. He was a devoted husband to Sharon, a loving father to Lisa (Marcus Akins), Harold (Wenhui Chen), Jennifer (Brian Bresney), and Joshua (Jennifer Schecter), and an immensely proud grandfather

His nine grandchildren—Brendan, Julia, Chelsey, Emiley, Chloey, Benjamin, Hannah, Adeline, and Tony—held a special place in his heart. Barry cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, whether sharing conversations about life, kicking a soccer ball, watching them play sports, enjoying their dancing, or simply being together. He took a genuine interest in each of their lives, celebrated their accomplishments, and made sure they knew how deeply they were loved. The close relationships he shared with his grandchildren were among his greatest joys. On top of having nine grandchildren Barry was also blessed with the opportunity to see four great grandchildren come into this world. Their names are Connor, Jack, Oliver, and Henry. Each of which held a special place in his heart.

Barry also had a lifelong appreciation for music, cars, football, and the simple pleasure of spending time with the people he loved. He enjoyed life's experiences, embraced new challenges, and found meaning in the connections he made along the way.

Those who knew Barry will remember not only his intelligence, determination, and accomplishments, but also his kindness, generosity, empathy, and ability to bring light into the lives of others. He understood that life's greatest measure of success was not found in what a person accumulated or achieved, but in the love they shared and the difference they made in the lives of those around them.

Barry leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the businesses he built or the careers he pursued. His legacy lives on in his family, in the countless individuals he helped, and in the love and wisdom he shared so generously throughout his life.

He will be deeply loved, profoundly missed, and forever remembered.

Perhaps his own words best capture the way he chose to live and the legacy he leaves behind:

"Darkness cannot exist where there is light."

Barry spent his life bringing that light to others. And although he is no longer physically with us, the light he shared will continue to shine through the lives of everyone he touched.

Anthony (Tony) Cammarata, 97, of Endicott, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026.
Born October 9, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Giacomo (Jack) and Loreta (Laura) Cammarata. A lifelong resident of the Southern Tier, Tony was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He retired from IBM Glendale after many years, where he worked as a manager and technical writer and was respected and admired for his creativity, talent, dedication, and strong work ethic.
For the last several years of his life, Tony made his home at United Methodist Homes' Hilltop Campus, where he enjoyed the companionship of fellow residents and staff. His family is thankful for the kindness shown to Tony during his years at Hilltop. The family is also grateful for the meaningful friendship fellow Hilltop resident Ruthanne shared with Tony.
Family was the most important part of Tony's life. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor (Ellie) Cammarata, with whom he shared nearly 60 wonderful years together. They raised four children and created a home filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
Tony was immensely proud of his four children, Beth (Greg), Steve (Parisa), Laurie (Jerry), and Jennie (Daryl), and treasured the time he spent with his three grandchildren, Clairissa (Raul), Kyle, and Melody. Whether gathered around the dinner table, attending family celebrations, or simply spending an afternoon together, Tony cherished every opportunity to be with those he loved.
Tony enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He was a master craftsman who custom designed, built, and flew radio-controlled airplanes—a skill that has become something of a lost art. He often painted his model plane pilot figures to resemble himself in the cockpit. Tony was also an avid fly fisherman who tied countless flies of his own, and loved to share amazing tall tales about "the big one that got away!" Any day Tony could spend casting his line from in or on the water with Ellie nearby, sitting on the riverbank reading a good book, was a great day. Tony was also a diehard NY Mets and NY Giants fan. He loved rooting for the underdog. Tony's love of gaming occasionally found him tableside playing craps or blackjack, many times with family in tow, all trying their luck. The occasional poker game with lifelong buddies at Mike's house was something he also greatly enjoyed. In his younger years, Tony was a member of a local bowling league, and for most of his life was an avid golfer. Tony loved to read and would usually be nose deep in titles related to prominent figures or events from U.S. history related to the Civil War and World War II. Those closest to Tony will remember his wit, sense of humor, generosity, kindness, and ability to tell a good story.
Tony was a man who valued family, hard work, and the simple pleasures of life. He did not need much to be happy; having his family nearby was often more than enough. His presence brought comfort and familiarity to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Tony is survived by his four children, his three cherished grandchildren, cousins, his sister-in-law, nieces, a nephew and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ellie (Cammarata).
Family and friends may attend a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel on Saturday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will follow immediately at Riverhurst Cemetery in Endicott.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org) or Mom's House (https://momshouseny.org/), two organizations that were special to him.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the UHS Emergency Room staff, especially his ER nurse, Christy, for the compassionate care given to Tony.
Tony will be remembered most for his love of family, his generous heart, and the many memories he created throughout his life. Though he will be greatly missed, his love and legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
