As promised Seth Jackson here is a continuation of that walnut table base. After the sections were glued up they needed to be cut into circles. There were six sections in all. Will continue to post updates on glue up and building!

Really pushed myself to the limit with this custom project, but in all the stress and difficulties of a project I always come out at the end having learned something new or acquired a new skill. Never be afraid to push yourself. These cabinets turned out beautifully! Fully finished photos to come!

I am always grateful at how easy Rubio Monocoat USA is to apply! I don’t usually do repair work on tables but I had a previous customer that needed help with a custom conference table I made for them. Rubio monocoat is a great product, I was in and out of there in no time!

Back in January we were able to put our Flat Pack Windmill Bar Stools Civic Brewing & Pizza Co in Sopchoppy Florida. It was a privilege working with Elliot at Civic. We love seeing our products in commercial spaces as well in a private home. Marrying design and beauty with functionality is what we really enjoy!

Well… I’m back.

In case you were wondering, Old Tree is still very much alive and still making furniture. I’ve been intentionally staying off social media for a while, but I recently figured out I can post from my computer without putting it back on my phone. So I figured I’d give it another shot. 😂

Anyway, here’s something I’ve been working on.

This is the first real piece of furniture I’ve built for our own house. We finally have a house worth building furniture for, so I took my time with this one.

The table is made from red oak and finished with Rubio Monocoat. It ended up being one of the best finish jobs I’ve ever done.

I purposely kept the overall design simple. I’ve never been a big fan of spending a ton of time building an elaborate table base that gets hidden behind chairs anyway.

But when the overall design is simple, the details become more important.

So I added some hand-carved texture along the apron and edges, along with a subtle detail that makes the tabletop look like it’s floating slightly above the base.

Simple overall design + Interesting details + Solid materials = Badass Table

We love this table, and I’m hoping it sticks around for many generations.

I’m pretty sure it will. I tend to overbuild everything. 😂

This one’s a throwback—side tables I built a few years back when I was living in Idaho. Nothing too fancy here, just simple boxes with a couple of drawers and some clean hardware. But what makes them stand out to me is the color.
Normally, I don’t like adding color to wood. I’ve always believed the natural tones are beautiful enough on their own. Covering them up feels a bit like throwing a tablecloth over a nice table. But this client wanted black.
I could have just painted a cheaper material, but if I couldn’t highlight the natural color, I at least wanted to show off the grain. That’s why I chose white oak for this project—it has such a strong, defined texture that adds depth and character even in a simple design.
For the finish, I went with my favorite: Rubio Monocoat. First, I laid down their “Intense Black” pre-color for the bold undertone, then topped it with “Charcoal” Oil Plus 2C for protection and a matte sheen. The result? A rich, bold black that still lets the oak grain shine through.
Honestly, I was really happy with how these turned out. I’ve since used the same combo on a set of dining chairs, and I liked those just as much. Sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone pays off—you never know what you might end up loving.
