Today, we celebrate what would have been the 101st birthday of George Wein, the visionary producer, pianist, and impresario whose passion for music helped reshape the way the world experiences live music!
Born October 3, 1925, Wein spent more than seven decades bringing musicians and audiences together. In 1954, he produced the first Newport Jazz Festival, creating a model for the modern outdoor music festival. He went on to establish the Newport Folk Festival, produce festivals around the world, and pioneer new approaches to festival production and sponsorship.
In 1970, Wein brought his festival vision to New Orleans. Hired to design and produce a new festival celebrating the city's musical heritage, he developed the concept for the Louisiana Heritage Fair: multiple stages, Louisiana music, food, arts and crafts, and evening concerts. That vision became the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
The first Jazz Fest welcomed only about 350 people, but Wein understood the power of what New Orleans had to offer. He envisioned a festival that could celebrate the city's living musical heritage while bringing artists, culture bearers, food vendors, craftspeople, and audiences together. His collaboration with Allison Miner and Quint Davis helped establish the foundation for the festival Jazz Fest would become.
The National Endowment for the Arts recognized Wein as a Jazz Master in 2005 for his extraordinary contributions to jazz advocacy and presentation.
Wein's passion for music never faded. A professional pianist from his teenage years, Wein continued performing with the Newport All-Stars well into his 90s. His life was defined not simply by the festivals he created, but by a lifelong belief in the power of music to bring people together.
On what would have been his 101st birthday, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation remembers George Wein and celebrates the extraordinary legacy he helped create in New Orleans and around the world!
