The Studio Tour offers an ideal opportunity to take a relaxing drive through Chatham County’s rolling hills and pastoral farmlands to visit artist’s studios that dot the countryside. Visitors meet the artists, learn about their processes and artistic visions, and browse affordable original works of art.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of installing this cabinet that I made for dear friends.
The wood is heart pine from a tree on their property. You can see the deep resin on the bottom drawers.
It's a spice cabinet, so the top doors open 150 degrees, so that internal drawers can be pulled out.
Next to it are Southern Yellow Pine kitchen cabinets that I made for them 30 years ago.

I first buillt this vanity cabinet in 1995, with kitchen/house cabinets. In a closet behind, a hot water heater and pipes broke. The cabinet came out in pieces. Back, bottom and sides ruined. My client loved this cabinet and asked me to remake it.
I think it has another 30 good years in it.

Making cabinets out of very resinous heart pine is a challenge in many ways. Mostly you "can't" sand it down. The resin responds better to blades. It's also tough on the lungs. Thus the mask.

This summer I am helping 3 clients from 30+ years ago, clean up, repair, replace hinges, and add on to kitchens I installed in the early '90's. It's so satisfying to give these cabinets new life. A good product really does last!
(If only my knees held up that well!)
