The Original Hanging Chair The Original Hanging Chair, invented in the early 1970's by Kurt Buetow, offers a level of floating comfort that cannot be matched in traditional seating.

The Original Hanging Chair was designed by my father, Kurt Buetow, in the early 1970’s in Minnesota, and has since become a well-known design in many parts of the world. After winning the International Canvas Furniture Design Competition in Tokyo in 1974, The Hanging Chair was clearly a design with great business potential, but as a full-time designer and creative, Kurt’s focus was to continue to innovate. He instead encouraged his cousins to create the Sky Chairs company using his design, which popularized the chair across the globe. Over the years Kurt has continued to experiment with new designs of hanging chairs, hanging bathtubs, tents, sails, and yurts, among many other things. As a kid I grew up in hanging chairs and began to sew them at an early age. I made them for family and friends, and eventually began helping my father with chair orders. Now I handcraft these chairs here in Portland and put the passion I learned from my father into every step of the creation process from sanding dowels to cutting canvas.
