Rice's Stump Grinding

10/22/2026

Another couple of “regrinds” that a tree company did a lame flush grind on a few stumps. They were done a few years ago, but grass won’t grow on top of a flush ground stump.

Check out this massive oak stump that I tackled yesterday. 8ft diameter at the core, and about a 16ft total grind area.

I moved the excess chips into the woods, then roughly flattened the area out.

I took care of this stump at Sheetz on Huguenot/Robious a few days ago. Stump ground, mulch removed and the hole was backfilled with topsoil.

A 29” wide stump grinder squeezed into a 24” wide space, that’s some tight access!

Just finished up a very tight access stump project off Grove Ave in Richmond.
My 28” wide remote controlled grinder just barely fit through the gate and immediate turn between landscaping.

Thank you McCormick Tree Care for bringing me in to help.

This huge pine stump (72” diameter) had already been “ground up” by someone else 2 years ago.
The new homeowner moved the pile of chips that was hiding it, only to discover that the stump was still about 6” above grade.
Grass is the end goal. So I ground up the entire 18ft diameter where mulch was hiding its raised root system. I also removed a few yards of chips from that area, then neatened it up a little.
The homeowner now just needs to put down a few yards of topsoil to make it match the surrounding grade a bit better.

These pine stumps were within the critical root zone of some nearby pines— that is one of the few scenarios where a shallow grind is the right thing to do, so that is exactly what I did.

The customer had started off wanting an extremely deep and wide grind, which is what I usually do. However, once I informed him of the danger to the other trees, he agreed that a shallow grind was the answer .

This was another customer that owns a tractor. Tractor owners are always inclined to have me grind their stumps, while leaving 100% of the mess for them to deal with. That was the case here.

23 good sized stumps ground up, mostly oak and poplar. The closest large surface roots, and any dirt mounding area these were also ground up.

This mature holly stump was a decent size, but its root spread was huge, 18ft in diameter. This area is going to be converted to a lawn and the landscaper I did this for wanted more of a turn key package, so I took this well beyond stump grinding.
First I ground the core of the stump. Then I moved 1.5-2 cubic yards of chips into the nearby tree-line. Next I ground up the entire 18ft diameter root zone. While there were a lot of roots, the majority of the area was nice and dark soil. I pulled the larger broken off chunks of root out and put them into the woods as well. To finish, I roughly leveled everything out.

Doing it this way will allow grass to thrive here very quickly. While grass seed could probably be planted right on top as is, a little bit of hand work with rakes while applying topsoil to the low spots, would take this to complete perfection.
