Sometimes the best part of our job is uncovering a hidden treasure.
When this antique trunk arrived at Pender's Antiques and Refinishing, it was completely coated in black. We carefully stripped away the dark layers, sanded everything down to a smooth finish, and finally revealed this incredibly warm, gorgeous natural wood grain hiding just beneath the surface! After treating the raw wood and sealing it for protection, this piece completely transformed from a dark, forgotten box into a stunning, rustic focal point. It’s ready to be the perfect chest in its home!

Taking new cabinets from bare wood to a flawless, factory-smooth finish is all about the prep work! We don’t just slap on a coat of paint. Here is our step-by-step process for getting that perfect, durable finish:
Prep & Sand: We start by sanding the raw wood to open the grain and create a perfectly smooth foundation.
High-Quality Primer: We apply a premium primer to seal the wood and prevent any natural wood tannins from bleeding through the final color.
The Fine Sand: Once the primer is dry, we do an ultra-fine hand sand. This knocks down any raised wood grain and guarantees a glass-like surface.
Flawless Application: We apply multiple thin, even coats of professional-grade cabinet enamel, allowing proper drying time between each layer.
The result? Beautiful, silky-smooth cabinets that will easily withstand the daily wear and tear of a busy home

Never underestimate the power of a few yards of fabric and a staple gun.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly alternative to heavy plastic sheeting, self-adhesive lamination stickers (also known as clear vinyl laminate sheets or contact paper) are a fantastic shortcut. They are perfect for sealing table surfaces, protecting patterned vinyl wraps on dressers, or locking down decorative decals on wood.

Restoring a piece of furniture after a house fire is incredibly rewarding, but it requires a very specific process. Wood is porous, meaning it absorbs both heat and smoke, so standard refinishing steps won't work.
Here is the science and step-by-step method used to save this dresser:
Phase 1: Acidic Soot Removal
The first step involves vacuuming dry soot, followed by a deep scrub with specialized chemical sponges and degreasers to break down the oily residue.
Phase 2: Neutralizing the Smoke Odor
To completely eliminate the smell (rather than just mask it), the piece often undergoes a special treatment or is thoroughly washed with a deodorizing agent.
Phase 3: Stripping the Heat Damage
Intense heat causes old varnish and paint to blister, bubble, and char. We have to strip away the ruined finish and sand past the superficial charring to reach the healthy, unburned raw wood underneath.
Phase 4: Re-binding & Structural Repairs
The combination of heat and moisture (from the firefighters) can warp wood and dissolve old glue. This stage requires re-gluing joints, clamping warped panels, and rebuilding structural integrity.
Phase 5: The "Odor-Lock" Seal
If you don't seal it properly, the smoke smell will bleed through the new finish on warm days. Applying a high-quality, shellac-based primer is essential because shellac acts as a barrier that permanently traps residual odors.
Phase 6: The Final Reveal
Once sealed, the dresser is treated like a normal piece. It’s ready for stain, paint, and new hardware to begin its second life.
It takes patience, but saving a piece of history is always worth the effort! If you have a piece that needs thoughtful, careful restoration, visit our website to get a free quote.
