Behold the classic cast bronze leopard, by the Edo People of Benin! In Edo, as in many other cultures, the leopard is conceptualized as an icon of courage, strength and perseverance. By tradition, if a young boy desires to be king someday, he must hunt and kill such an animal to prove his future leadership skills. Once he achieves this rite of passage, fellow Edo People reward the boy with a statue such as this. As hunting these beasts has been long forbidden in this region, these leopard statues are now retained as decorative pieces by the wealthy within Edo society.
