This is not a hand caned seat. The method of caning for this particular chair is prewoven cane webbing. The material is made on a loom and we insert it into a groove. But this is such a handsome chair that it deserves a post! And once again, before you ask, sorry it is not for sale. This is a customer’s chair. 🪑

If you think that the previous pictures of the maple Lincoln rocker and post were something, here is a challenge far beyond that.

It is a barrel back chair. And is blind caned. Meaning each hole is not all the way drilled through and the cane has to be pegged to hold it in place.

Also, because of the style. You weave this differently to keep the shape. Both verticals first. Then the first horizontal row, goes between them. A steady hand is helpful.

You have to keep in mind that there must be some, but not too much slack in each step, so the weavers aren’t too tight. Phew!

To finish this off. Erin will remove each peg and put a binder around the edge to finish it off. Each hole will get a hand cut cane staple and some glue to hold it all together.
Patience and experience. Need both to do these chairs!

For all of you who have been following this project…here it is! Finally completed!
What a beautiful Lincoln rocker with a combination of birds eye maple and tiger maple. Many many hours went into this one. Now we are just waiting for the owner to bring it home. 🪑

The last of this type of weaving is about finished.
Next Erin will straighten the horizontal and vertical rows in preparation for the diagonal rows. The final two steps before the binder is added.
Straightening rows can be a time consuming task, but it shows in the finished product. Small things make a big difference ! 🪑

This is the ultimate challenge when weaving a Lincoln rocker backrest.
It has convex and concave curves, which mean you have to weave it in a totally different manner. Opposite of what would normally be done. That’s so you can maintain both curves minimizing the risk of breaking the back cane. Or worse even the side rails !
Not for the faint of heart, nor for someone with little patience. The end results are stunning !
This rocker is made of maple. Both curley and bird’s eye. A very rare chair! 🪑

And sorry, but this is a customer’s piece, not for sale .🙁

I just recently finished weaving the seat on this beautiful “stick & ball” rocking chair. The frame is newly refinished and with its new seat it will look handsome in someone’s home.

The seat was woven with a wide binding cane in a herringbone pattern. A very sturdy pattern that will last for many years. It is not an easy pattern to do, it was very tough on the hands.

And before you even wonder or ask, it is NOT for sale! This belongs to a customer. Sorry! 🪑
