The Bay Model lives on!

🌊 CALIFORNIA ONCE BUILT A MINIATURE SAN FRANCISCO BAY TO TEST A RADICAL PLAN!

In the 1940s and 1950s, an extraordinary proposal threatened to permanently transform San Francisco Bay. The idea?

Build two enormous dams and convert much of the bay into freshwater reservoirs.
Before making such a dramatic change, engineers needed answers.

So they built an incredible working model inside a Sausalito warehouse.

The miniature bay eventually covered 1.5 acres, complete with flowing water and simulated tides.

Testing revealed serious flooding risks associated with the proposed dams. The massive construction project never happened.

And the extraordinary model still survives today.

Sometimes the biggest engineering decisions begin with a miniature world.
