California's years-long drought has exposed a serious flaw in its Industrial Agriculture model. Without billions of gallons of expensive irrigation water, California's Central Valley, the "Bread Basket" of the U.S., is not a sustainable farming system when exposed to normal climate fluctuations.
As the U.N. recently reported, the world's food needs can be met with small, localized, private and community farms that are very water efficient. Here's an example of how you can easily grow a staple food, Potatoes, right in your own backyard or deck with a minimum of water.
