The Warren is a gorgeous russeted juicy pear with a melting mouth feel. It is sweet to taste and does not have the grittiness found in many pear varieties. The Warren pear’s skin turns a golden yellow as it ripens and can develop a pretty blush in full sun.

The Warren pear was discovered in 1976 by Thomas Oscar Warren growing naturally outside a post office in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Once known as the Post Office pear, it's taken on its founder name. Similar in size to a D’Anjou, chefs prize this sweet and buttery pear in tarts or cakes, poached in w**e, in salads and on sandwiches. Slice them up and enjoy with nut butter, cheese or honey.

Grown by Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood, Warren Pears are harvested in late August/early September and are available until late October.

When is a pear ripe?
Pears are one of the few fruits that do not ripen on the tree. Pears are harvested when mature and if left at room temperature, they slowly reach a sweet and succulent maturity as it ripens from the inside out. Apply gentle pressure to the neck of the pear daily with your thumb. If it yields to pressure, it’s ripe.

Storing Pears
Once the pear is ripe, it can be refrigerated to slow the ripening process and saved for use up to five days later.

“Frog Hollow’s regenerative organic practices not only produce delicious fruit, but they also provide important ecosystem and climate benefits. We build soil health by composting, planting cover crops, and not tilling. The soil contains thriving communities of beneficial microbes and fungi that fertilize our trees. And we are fighting climate change by building the carbon storage capacity of our soil. Our orchards store an average of 29 tons of carbon per acre – that’s the equivalent of taking 1,488 passenger vehicles off the road for one year!”

FLORAL QUINCE
Quince has very hard and bumpy green/yellowish skin that looks like a cross between a pear and an apple. But beware! Do not try to bite into it like an apple, the tart and astringent flesh demands to be cooked before eating. Quince is high in pectin and typically used to make jams, jellies, and chutneys. They can also be used in pies or to make w**e. When cooked the flesh turns a golden amber color and the sweet flavor will keep you looking for quince every fall.

We expect them to only be around for a few weeks so get them while you can.  When choosing a quince, smell the bottom end of the fruit. It should have a wonderful floral fragrance. Quince make a beautiful and fragrant centerpiece. Susan, our marketing manager, suggests putting a quince in a drawer like you would a sachet of dried flowers. It should last for about a month but don’t forget to take it out of your drawer!

Comanche Creek in Chico is now packing a beautiful Mixed Eggplant with Rosa Bianca, Barbarella and Gaudi varieties.

The Barbarella eggplant is a squat and round variety from Sicily known for its deep purple skin, distinct white halo under the calyx, and dense, mild-tasting white flesh. Its firm, meaty texture works wonderfully in vegetarian dishes and tapenades.

The Gaudi has dark purple glossy skin with attractive bell or teardrop shape. Use like you would the classic Italian globe eggplant by roasting, grilling, making casseroles, or blending it into dips.

Rosa Bianca is a striking Sicilian heirloom eggplant known for its creamy, sweet, and mild white flesh with lavender and white-striped skin. It has very few seeds with no bitterness

Kiwano Horned Melon taste like a mix of cucumber, kiwis and bananas when ripe. The fruit will have an orange rind and give slightly to gentle pressure when ripe. Cut in half like a kiwi fruit and scoop out the fruit or squeeze the cut fruit from the bottom and tilt the loosened fruit into your mouth. The seeds are edible, but the real flavor is in the green flesh! Grown by Swift Subtropicals (San Luis Obispo County.)

"Traditionally, if you let the tulip bloom and die back, the bulb will pull energy from the dying flower and foliage back into the bulb and store it, to enable it to bloom next year. Since we use the tulips for cut flowers, we cut the life source, so the bulb doesn’t have much energy to pull back in. There is a slight chance that it will grow and bloom again next year, but it must be stored properly until it’s planted again. This involves it being chilled in a cooler for the year, until it’s time to plant. It may just produce foliage with no flower the first year, then the following year, it may bloom. It’s not guaranteed. This is why, since we grow for cut flower production, we purchase new bulbs every year and compost our spent bulbs." T.J. Silva Earthbound Farmstand grower
