The Zia sun, by daylight. Straight on, it sits on the adobe like a stamp. Step to the side and you can see the cut wrap around the curve of the clay. After dark, every one of those openings turns to light, and it is just as at home on an outside wall as an inside one.

Which one goes home with you? The sunburst, the cross, the one with the antlers. This is one wall of the showroom in Pojoaque, just north of Santa Fe, and there is more around the corner.

After the design is cut, every edge gets wiped down with a damp sponge. It is slow work, and it is why every little crescent and petal comes out clean once the light is on. The second photo is the rest of the batch, waiting its turn.

From underneath, it is a bowl of warm light with a ring of small openings around the rim. Walk around to the front and there is a whole pueblo cut into the clay: windows, doorways, rooftops stepping up one above the next, every one opened by hand. Hang it over a table and the village stays lit through dinner.

From liquid clay to a lit wall.

Dominic walks through how every piece gets made. Cast in a mold, cut by hand, fired to 1,900 degrees and cooled down slow, then finished inside and out. About three weeks from start to finish.

One source lights a room. Three at different heights make it feel lived in: a lamp low enough to read by, a sconce on the wall to give it some shape, and whatever the window is doing behind it all. Swipe for the three together.

Three tiers, and most of the light goes up the wall. The stepped cutouts around the rim are the only pattern on this one, so the shape does the talking: a warm wash above, a softer pool below, the piece sitting quiet in between.

Cut by hand in Pojoaque. Come see it lit.

Made by hand in Santa Fe, then hung on a wall.

Sconces and pendants, indoors and out: entryways, portals, garden walls. All of it comes alive once the sun goes down.

Pick a design, a shape and a color, or bring us your own. We will make it for you.
