Design Within Reach The Seattle Studio occupies a newly renovated building in the Pike Place Market neighborhood, a walker’s paradise rich in history and loaded with shops.

Our Seattle Studio is located in Belltown, a mixed commercial and residential neighborhood known for its quirky restaurants, shops, markets, art galleries and music venues. Just blocks from the Pike Place Market, the Studio is sited in a historic 1902 building that formerly served as a hotel -- evidenced by the original octagon tile in one corner of the Studio where the hotel lobby stood.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe believed “God is in the details.” The Barcelona Chair is proof. Designed for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona – a room of travertine and onyx conceived by Mies and collaborator Lilly Reich – the chairs were the only seats in it. Its crisscross base echoes the ancient Roman curule seat, while 40 hand-cut leather panels were each tufted, welted, and sewn together by hand to Mies’ exacting specifications. Every chair Knoll makes today is held to the same standard, keeping it what it always was – a modern throne.

Weekend plans? Why not refresh the room you use Monday to Friday? Warm layers and natural materials create a feeling of comfort, so the workday starts on a softer note.

Our picks include Vipp's sleek 452 Swivel Chair upholstered in curly Australian sheepskin, Gubi’s Gravity Table Lamp in new emerald marble, and the plush Lattice Rug from Flamingo Estate's collaboration with artisan rugmaker Beni Rugs.

Here’s to the new DWR Birmingham. We marked its opening with Cranbrook Art Museum, Design Coredet, Detroit Design Magazine, and HOUR Detroit Magazine. Our evening centered on a panel discussion inspired by “Eventually Everything Connects: Midcentury Modern Design in the US,” a book published by Cranbrook Art Museum, exploring the designers, ideas, and objects that shaped American modernism and continue to influence design today. A fitting start for a space built on great design and the conversations it sparks.

Eero Saarinen had a problem. The “slum of legs” beneath tables and chairs clashed with his pursuit of purity of form. His solution was radical in its simplicity: Replace the many with one. Before Saarinen was an architect, he was a sculptor. He first studied the discipline in Paris, and that instinct – to see objects as three-dimensional forms to be felt as much as used – shaped his approach to design.

So he set out like an artist possessed: Hundreds of drawings gave way to quarter-scale models, then full-scale forms he refined obsessively in clay, shaping and reshaping until they were right.

The result: chairs and tables reduced to a single column melting into its base, a silhouette so fluid it reads like a drop of liquid. Decades on, the Pedestal Table remains a monument to Saarinen’s design conviction, its base now offered in warm white.

Midcentury functionalist Poul Volther and contemporary design studio Yabu Pushelberg spective work spans more than 70 years. Volther broke from Danish tradition in 1964 with his Corona Chair from Fredericia Furniture – its elliptical cushions mirroring a lunar eclipse. Today, Yabu Pushelberg demonstrates the strength of geometric simplicity with the Reframe Pendant from Louis Poulsen.

Raleigh, our doors are open.

Our new store is shaped by the state’s deep design fluency. High Point’s furniture trade built a manufacturing discipline passed down over a century. NC State’s design program brought modernism into daily life. And Black Mountain College – where Bauhaus émigrés like Josef Albers taught – imparted an instinct for experimentation that outlasted the school itself. Here, it all comes together in a store built around industry, ideas, and craft alike.

Bill Stumpf called them “postural whims” – the slouching, the reclining, the leg over the armrest, the crossed legs that shift every so often. As an industrial designer, he wanted to understand what sitting does to the human body, and even in grad school he was already consulting specialists in orthopedic and vascular medicine.

By the time he and Don Chadwick designed the Aeron Chair in 1994, the two had gathered decades of research – data analysis, sitting machine tests, computer modeling, and materials research – and made several models that each solved a problem the last one had left open. Aeron was where it all landed.

Proprietary Pellicle suspension replaces foam entirely, distributing weight evenly across a surface that breathes. Three sizes allow for calibrated comfort so the chair fits the person, not the other way around. A reengineered aluminum base has made it 1.85 pounds lighter – reducing its carbon footprint – and the frame of Aeron in Onyx is now built from ocean-bound plastics to make it more sustainable than ever. In two new saturated tones, Aeron still holds up to the way we actually sit.

In 1958, Arne Jacobsen shaped the Swan Chair’s embracing silhouette to welcome guests of Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel, which he also designed. To bring that organic form to life, he collaborated with FRITZ HANSEN to use polyurethane foam – a radical new material at the time.

This Danish icon is now updated in Voulez Vous upholstery by Dedar, a regenerative cotton twill with a bold graphic stripe. The straight lines cut across the chair's rounded form, sharpening Swan with an architectural edge.
