Want to know why some rooms look beautifully finished while others still feel like something is missing?

Look at your lighting.

One overhead fixture is rarely enough to make a room feel warm and inviting.

Great rooms use layers of light. Start with your overhead lighting, then add lamps at different heights throughout the room. A table lamp creates warmth. A floor lamp can brighten a dark corner. Accent lighting can highlight artwork or something beautiful you want people to notice.

DESIGNER TRICK: Try to have at least three sources of light in a room. And whenever possible, put your lamps on dimmers so you can change the mood throughout the day.

Lighting does more than help you see your room. It changes how the room feels.

And sometimes a fabulous lamp is all it takes to give an old space a completely new personality.

Want your home to feel layered instead of flat?

Mix your wood tones.

Your dining table does not have to match your buffet. Your coffee table does not have to match your end tables. And every piece of wood in the room definitely does not need to be the same finish.

In fact, rooms are often more interesting when they are not.

Walnut, oak, mahogany and painted finishes can live beautifully together when there is balance throughout the room.

DESIGNER TRICK: Choose one dominant wood tone, then repeat your secondary tones at least once somewhere else in the room. That repetition makes the mix feel intentional.

This is one of the reasons consignment works so beautifully in a collected home. Pieces from different periods and makers bring depth and character that a matching furniture suite simply cannot.

Use a mirror strategically.

A mirror does much more than fill an empty wall. Positioned correctly, it can reflect natural light, open up a darker corner and visually expand a room.

But what the mirror reflects matters.

Before you hang it, stand where the mirror will go and look at what will be reflected. A beautiful window, chandelier, artwork or interesting part of the room is worth repeating.

DESIGNER TRICK: Treat a mirror like a piece of art. Consider its scale, shape and frame, then use the reflection as part of your design.

Want your room to look more interesting?

Stop buying everything in pairs.

Two matching lamps can be beautiful. Two matching chairs can make sense. But when everything comes in twos, a room can start feeling more like a furniture showroom than a home.

Mixing shapes, heights and styles creates movement and gives the eye somewhere to travel.

Try a lamp on one side of a console and a tall vase or sculpture on the other. Mix an upholstered chair with something more architectural. Let your accessories relate without being identical.

DESIGNER TRICK: Symmetry creates order. Asymmetry creates interest. The best rooms usually know how to use both.

That is one of the beauties of shopping consignment. You can find pieces with personality instead of buying an entire room from the same collection.

Give your furniture some breathing room.

Not every piece needs to be pushed against a wall.

Pulling a chair into a conversation area, floating a sofa, or allowing a console to stand on its own can completely change how a room feels.

Furniture placement should encourage people to gather, talk and move comfortably through the room.

DESIGNER TRICK: Start with the way you actually live in the room. Create conversation areas first, then fill in the empty spaces only where something is truly needed.

Sometimes the best thing you can add to a room is nothing at all.
