Unpopular opinion: renovating a bedroom before selling your home is almost always a waste.

Here's the honest math.

Buyers repaint bedrooms. They change flooring. They replace light fixtures. These things are personal what you think looks good, they think looks wrong.

Kitchens are different.

A renovated kitchen isn't a taste preference it's a functional upgrade every buyer can see and price. The kitchen is the one room that can move a home from "we'd need to do work" to "move-in ready" in a buyer's mind.

Move-in ready gets offers. Offers close.

At DCM manufacturer-direct pricing, a full kitchen cabinet refresh starts at $2,800. That's the investment that moves a buyer's mental price.

What room would you renovate before selling? Drop it in the comments.

Most people order cabinets and completely forget the accessories.

Then they get to the installation and realize the kitchen still looks unfinished.

The Detroit Cabinet Manufacturing 2026 catalog includes accessories and here's what people consistently forget to order:

CROWN MOLDING: The trim piece that closes the gap between your wall cabinets and the ceiling. The single most impactful finishing detail in a kitchen. Without it, even beautiful cabinets look unfinished. With it, the kitchen looks professionally designed.

FILLER STRIPS: The pieces that fill the gaps between your last cabinet and the wall. These are not optional every kitchen layout has at least one place where a filler strip is required.

CORBELS: Decorative support brackets for countertop overhangs and range hoods. They add visual weight and a furniture-like quality to cabinet runs.

DECORATIVE BASE TRIM: The trim above the toe kick at the base of your cabinets. Adds a furniture-quality finish to the bottom of your kitchen.

W**E RACKS AND PLATE RACKS: Functional accessories that make cabinets more useful and more organized.

All of these are in the 2026 catalog with real prices.

If you're planning a kitchen download the catalog before you finalize your order. Check the accessories section. You'll be glad you did.

"You have to see a cabinet in person before you can order."

THE PARTIAL TRUTH:
Finish colors look different on a screen than in real life. A monitor calibrated for cool color temperature will make Shaker White look slightly different from our Shaker White door under warm natural light. If you're deciding between two finishes that are close — Shaker Dove vs. Shaker White, for example — seeing them in real light in real space genuinely helps.

WHAT MAKES THIS A MYTH:
The belief that you can't make a confident ordering decision without an in-person visit is overstated for most buyers — especially when you use our free design tools correctly.

HOW TO ORDER CONFIDENTLY WITHOUT A VISIT:

Step 1: Request a free 3D design with your chosen finish. See the finish applied to your actual cabinet layout in your actual room dimensions. This solves the "I can't visualize it" problem more effectively than a showroom visit for most people.

Step 2: Order a sample door if you're deciding between finishes. We can discuss options at 313-351-7672.

Step 3: Read the product specification plywood box, solid wood front, cycle-rated hardware. The quality is in the spec, not the showroom.

THE HONEST ANSWER:
If you're in the Detroit area come in. It's worth 30 minutes and will give you full confidence. If you're not — our design tools are built to get you there without the visit.

Both paths lead to the same place: a cabinet order you're confident in.

We asked homeowners who've renovated their kitchens with Detroit Cabinet Manufacturing one question:

"What do you wish you knew before you started?"

Here's what they told us in their own words.

"I wish I knew how much the layout matters versus the finish. I agonized over the color for weeks. The layout took us 20 minutes to approve on the 3D design. The layout is what I think about every single day. The color I barely notice anymore."
— Homeowner, Rosedale Park

"I wish I'd known that the accessories matter. We ordered the cabinets and completely forgot to order crown molding and filler strips. Had to make a second order and it delayed installation by 4 days. The design team should have caught it — but so should I."
— Homeowner, Dearborn

"I wish I'd come to the showroom first before spending 3 weeks on the website. Seeing the finishes in person in actual light told me more in 20 minutes than all my online research combined."
— Homeowner, East English Village

"I wish I'd known the 3D design was free. I assumed there was a catch. There isn't. I used it twice — once at the beginning and once when I changed my mind about the island. Both times, 24 hours turnaround. Both times, no charge."— Homeowner, Grandmont

Before you commit to a cabinet supplier for a project, ask these 8 questions.

1: Is your box material plywood or particle board?
Non-negotiable. Particle board fails faster in every environment. A supplier who can't answer this immediately doesn't know their own product.

2: What is your actual in-stock lead time not estimated, actual?
"2–3 weeks" from a supplier who's actually an importer means 2–3 weeks after the factory ships. Get a ship date, not an estimate.

3: What happens when a piece arrives damaged?
The answer should be immediate: same-day or next-day replacement from in-stock inventory. Anything involving claims, timelines, or "we'll look into it" is a contractor's nightmare.

4: Can you do a per-unit takeoff for a multi-room project?
A real commercial supplier can. A retail website cannot.

5: Do you offer staged delivery by construction phase?
Matters for any job site with a schedule. If they've never heard of it, you're talking to a retail operation.

6: Do you have a dealer pricing structure separate from retail?
If their answer is "everything is already on sale," that's not a dealer program. It's a retail discount tactic.

7: Can I come in and see the box construction before I order?
Any manufacturer will say yes. Any importer will deflect.

8: What documentation do you provide for HUD or compliance projects?
For commercial work, this is table stakes. Know before you commit.

We answer all eight at Detroit Cabinet Manufacturing.

A real story from the last 18 months.

A property developer in Southfield reached out. They were pricing cabinets for an 18-unit new construction project. Standard process: get quotes from 3–4 suppliers, evaluate against budget, select and commit.

We sent them our 2026 catalog.

Within 48 hours, they'd used it to build their per-unit cabinet budget using Shaker Grey across all 18 kitchens. They submitted the floor plan to our free cost estimating service. We sent back a complete itemized quote within 24 hours.

Per-unit cabinet cost: $2,850.
Total project: $51,300.
Original budget target: $3,500 per unit.
They came in $11,700 under budget.

They also got unit-level packaging and labeling, staged delivery on their construction schedule, and full documentation for the project file.

The catalog made the evaluation fast. The rest of our procurement service made the project work.

The 2026 catalog is available to anyone who asks. Homeowners, contractors, developers the document is the same.

Here's why that's wrong and where this myth came from.

THE MYTH:
RTA (ready-to-assemble) cabinets are a budget, DIY solution. Professional contractors use custom or semi-custom cabinets for serious renovation projects.

WHERE IT CAME FROM:
Early RTA cabinets widely available in the 1990s and early 2000s were genuinely lower quality. Particle board boxes. Thin door material. Hardware that failed quickly. The "RTA = cheap" association developed from a real pattern during that era.

WHY IT'S NO LONGER TRUE:
RTA cabinet manufacturing has advanced significantly. Today, the distinction that matters is not RTA vs. assembled it's materials quality. A plywood-box RTA cabinet with solid wood front and cycle-rated hardware is structurally equivalent to a pre-assembled cabinet using the same materials at significantly lower cost.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS ACTUALLY SAY:
The contractors in our Dealer Program use our RTA cabinets on professional residential renovations regularly. The quality is indistinguishable from assembled alternatives at the same material spec. The cost difference is significant.

THE HONEST SUMMARY:
RTA is a shipping and assembly method. It is not a quality tier. Quality is determined by materials plywood vs. particle board, solid wood vs. MDF. A premium RTA cabinet is a better product than a budget assembled cabinet. Every time.

Comment the next cabinet myth you've heard. We'll bust it next week.

Renovation ROI data is widely cited. Less often is it broken down by room in a way that's actually useful for decision-making.

Here's the data that matters and what it means for how you should be thinking about your next renovation.

MINOR KITCHEN REMODEL (cabinet refresh + countertop):
Average national ROI at resale: 77.6%
Translation: $6,000 invested returns $4,656 in additional sale value. In Detroit metro — historically undervalued relative to national metrics — the actual return often outperforms the national average.

FULL BATHROOM REMODEL:
Average national ROI: 66.7%
Translation: $8,000 invested returns $5,336 in value. Bathroom + kitchen renovated together create a ""move-in ready"" premium that exceeds the sum of either done alone.

CLOSET SYSTEM ADDITION:
ROI is less straightforward because appraisers don't line-item closets — but market research consistently shows that staged homes with built-in closet systems spend 8–11 fewer days on market and receive fewer price negotiations.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DCM CUSTOMERS:
When your cabinet package costs $3,000 instead of $9,000 — your renovation ROI starts from a dramatically lower investment base. The return on the same resale value premium is significantly higher when the input cost is lower.

A $3,000 kitchen update that adds $6,000 in value is a 200% ROI — not 77%.

Manufacturer-direct pricing doesn't just save money. It changes the math on what a renovation returns.
