September 27, 2024, is a day that will forever be etched in the minds and hearts of those who endured Hurricane Helene.
For many of us, it was the beginning of weeks without power and communication. For some, it was the last day they would ever see a loved one.
We will forever be grateful for the incredible outpouring of love, support, and assistance that came from so many. In fear of forgetting one, I will not attempt to name them all. Please know that you will never be forgotten.
Today, may we remember the victims of Hurricane Helene and keep their families in our thoughts and prayers. We especially remember the families of those who are still missing.
But may we also remember what happened in the moments after the storm passed.
For a while, politics, opinions, disagreements, and personal differences seemed to disappear. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers became friends. Many of us met people living just down the road whom we had never spoken to before. We saw communities come together in ways that were truly remarkable.
Unfortunately, there were also individuals who came into our communities with ill intentions. I took those cases very personally, and I am proud to say that those responsible were identified, charged, and prosecuted accordingly.
But today isn’t about them.
Today is about remembering the lives lost, supporting the families left behind, and remembering the incredible strength and compassion our communities showed during one of the darkest moments many of us have ever experienced.
September 27th will always serve as a reminder of how fragile life can be. May we use it as a daily reminder to focus on the truly important things in life.
Take a moment today. Say a prayer. Hug your family. Check on your neighbor. Thank your local first responders.
And please join us in a moment of silence to remember the victims of Hurricane Helene, their families, and everyone whose lives were forever changed by that day.
We will remember.
